Is Mauger not running a Smith & Jones engine in the new Mk2?

A late wide Track GP A Escort Cosworth or a WRC Escort Cosworth, both running very aggressive ALS, looks and sounds that take some beating.

    Re: Best rally car?....

Forest rallying is crap compared to high speed more action tarmac,I'd say any ex works rwd or 4wd Ford takes some beating on tarmac for action.

And before anyone pipes up I have seen Perez, Burton in the pug or Alfa, even murrary Grierson in a 400 Kadett in the sticks and all were not as good as a tarmac specialist let loose

    Re: Best rally car?....

Although a bit off topic I think Fuzzy calling Forest Events as crap is a bit unfair. Although the average speed might not be quite as high in the Welsh Forests as some Tarmac events, some drivers on Rallies in Yorkshire or Clipstone have been known to hit an arse nipping 130mph on the long straights with trees no more than a few feet away.

From 1979 to 2004 only 2 drivers won the World Rally Championship that were renown Tarmac Experts, Rohrl and Auriol. Some of the great names to win the Championship which were gravel experts were Kankunnen, Sainz, Makkinen, McRae and Burns. Only when Loeb came on the scene did a Tarmac driver start winning a string of championships. Ireland had its own great Tarmac drivers with the likes of Fisher, McHale, Mckinstry, Nesbitt and Donnelly are names that spring to mind. Watch the in car Video of Nesbitt's co Driver shouting things things like "mind the car Andrew".

Anyone old enough to remember going out in the Forests in the 80s on the RAC Rally will remember the awesome howl of the Group B Cars like the Peugeot 205 T16, Lancia Delta S4, RS 200 and the 6R4. You could hear them coming from miles away with a sound that was crossed between a fighter Jet and a Dinosaur. There's something about the noise of a Car in a Forest, you would think the noise would be muffled by all the trees and vegitation but it's just the opposite, the exhaust note seems to bounce off the trees and amplify that wonderful sound.

Any true Rally Fan doesn't give a damn if they are watching drivers on gravel, tarmac or sheet ice as long as they are out there doing what they Love. In the UK events are thin and far between nowadays from what they were 25 years ago. The Forestry commission don't want the events taking place on their land, like they once did. Nottinghamshire Forests being a typical example of where they have been stopped from using them. The only closed Road Rally has been the Jim Clarke in Scotland.

As for my favourite Rally Car apart from my own, it has to be a toss up between Vatanan's Black MCD Escort and Roger Clarke's Cossack one. The Clarke car has to come out on top as he was the man that inspired me to get into Motorsport from being a schoolboy. The sound of Clarke revving the Engine 2000 rpm more than anyone else. That was the engine built by no other than John Wilcox before he went on to set up his own company.

I was amazed and very impressed whilst watching a B class rally on the net featuring an absolute monster of a car! That Peugeot! rear or 4 wheel? You would have to be a madman to drive that thing!
