    Trimming a manta sump flat?

Hi Chaps, has anyone ever mounted a manta sump with a zero degree bellhousing and trimmed the bottom corner off flat?
A mate donated it to me for free so it would be a shame not to use it and I want to mount the engine straight.
I need it to fit under a sump guard, it cant be drooping down, anyone ever done it? does much of it hang down below the xmember?

    Cheers

With a 7 degree bellhousing it does stick down, unfortunately I never took a detailed photo of it. Here's the closest thing I have:

I think with a 0 degree mounting it would probably be just about in line with the bottom of the crossmember, though it probably depends on the mounts you're using. It will be close though, no doubt about it.

hmm im confused, yours looks to be sitting lower on the drivers side, which means with a 0 degree bell housing it would be more level?? i assumed using a manta sump with a 0 degree bellhousing would have the sump dropping even further down?

Yes, I think we're saying the same thing; a 0 degree bellhousing should bring it more level; though perhaps still just below the level of the crossmember.

Eh? A 7 degree b/h should see the sump sit flat, 0 degree would see it drop on drivers side which that pic looks like it has.

only time you might need to trim a manta sump is on the ns when fitting a btb or tony law manifold

correct thats what i was thinking - it looks like that car has a manta sump with an upright engine.
I have a manta sump there, but i need to use a forestry spec sump guard bolted to the xmember - so i will need to trim a portion of the bottom corner off level with the xmember to clear the guard, but how much is safe?

Yeah, sorry. Can't explain that. Mine has a manta sump, and a 7 degree bellhousing. I suppose it's possible that SBD supplied the wrong one when I bought it some ~13 years ago.

Re: Trimming a manta sump flat?

yeah i guess thats possible - as the manta sump is supposed to sit dead flat with a 7deg bellhousing - i have the engine up on the stand now so i can pop on the manta sump, take some measurements off the xmember and get a pretty good idea of how much would stick down.

if you use a piece of fuel pipe inside a piece of heater hose to stop it collapsing then place it between the sumpgaurd and cross member, should have some clearance and also stop it vibrating against the xmember
