    heater hose tapping point?

    hi Folks,

firstly sorry for posting so many XE threads lately however ive trawled this section before posting so hopefully it might help others.

Anyway, my query! when blocking off the water outlet in the back of the head, where is the best place to tap the IN hose for the heater matrix then? Im aware that the XE cooling circuit is sensitive to hoses being Tee'd where they shouldn't be.
I have to keep the heater as i do alot of winter navigation rallies etc.

Its Hose 1 in this photo

if you think about the water pump hose where the pipe goes upto the inlet manifold,,,,,,, go from the water pump outlet to the heater matrix inlet then the matrix outlet to the inlet manifold, not 100% sure as i dont run a heater but cant see why it wouldnt work providing you bleed it properly

I run a heater from a mini, one hose goes to the bottom of the inlet (I run standard inlet), and the other is t pieced off the bottom rad hose.

    Re: heater hose tapping point?

I'll try and take some pics when I'm in the garage next but it's really cramped that side of the engine and it's difficult to see any of the piping.
There must a water outlet on the head on the inlet side as my standard inlet must get the water from somewhere, I suppose you need to find the source. The other hose is simple, just a t piece on the bottom rad hose.
Also there is an outlet on the back of the head, nearest the heater bubble. One of my mates managed to fabricate a pipe to fit in the little space available there and use that as a heater take off, looked like a massive piss about though.
    Hope this makes sense.

    Re: heater hose tapping point?

thanks luke. that pipe coming out of the head is the heater hose - im looking to find an alternative to that as it obviously has to be blocked off for a RWD installation if you want the engine as far back as possible.
see below - this is the normal setup if you cut a massive chunk out of your bulkhead and have space for the pipe, i have a standard bulkhead and dont want to cut it so i would never fit the pipe there.

    Re: heater hose tapping point?

I run one hose from the bottom hose and one from the inlet manifold! I would like to say its been fine but the heater motor packed up during the build (just ordered a new one) and the core plug on the back of the head has started to leak so engine out. I'm going to measure the space at the back of the engine and hopefully JB weld a right angle fitting in reducing it to 16mm and extend past the head and basically plum it back in as it should be, without the header tank HTH
When I grow up I will have a MK1 Escort

I must be all growed up now then and paying for it!

must just be a badly fitted core plug, mine is plumbed bottom hose and inlet and has been great.

So Perhaps in order to help others, il post what i decided to do here and it looks like it will work a treat .
got a plumbers tap and tapped the head to suit the fitting. pasted the threads with 2 pack sealer, perfect.
now i can just put a copper pipe in the end fitting with a bead on it same size as my escort heater and a small L shaped samco hose.
    interior heater sorted.

Will that not hit your bulkhead?, I've always plugged that water outlet flush.

It will very very slightly but with a brief introduction of a persuasion device to the bulkhead it will be pefect. I was going to cut it and make a little insert box but it doesn't even need that

    Re: heater hose tapping point?

I have a heater fitted in my escort, I made a stainless pipe that comes of my bottom rad hose that has a 17 mm take off pipe ( t ) that goes off into matrix and the return goes to my inlet manifold which has a tapped fitting for hose.
Take your time to get all air out of it, then should be good.

Yeah I think this will work good I was adamant to route the pipes as the manufacturer intended rather than tapping into pipes I shouls nt really be doing

thats the same fitting i used on mine, i also used a flexible braided household tap fitting which screws securely to it and gives you the right diameter of pipe to fit straight on to the heater outlet, it doesnt hit the bulkhead but i positioned my engine an inch further forward so i didnt have to cut the gearbox tunnel to fit the type 9 and had my propshaft extended by an inch to compensate

    Re: heater hose tapping point?

just said id do a quick update on this for others possibly in the same boat.
made a heater box over the christmas using the standard blower in the standard position in the heater bubble but the rest of the heater box cut off.
essentially i was left with a fan on the original brackets.
i then made a new smaller heater box out of sheet alloy with a new mk3 escort rad mounted inside for it to fit with the extra large tunnel. i used the standard widow blower vents but shorter foil connectors to the heater box.
i cut two 52mm holes in the bottom of the heater box for foot heaters, these can be closed off so all the hot air goes to the windscreen if desired.
the feed for the rad is the fitting above, with a bleed valve in line (which turned out to be gift bleeding the system) and a 90degree piece of samco hose.
the outlet for the heater goes down to an alloy hose junction i made. this takes the main bottom rad hose, the heater hose and the hose from the inlet manifold.
end result is better than i ever expected, system works lovely if a little too well, car never goes above 82 degrees this weather, but the heater works a treat.
the only downfall is i cant turn the heat off, so ive no cold lever. doesnt bother me, il open the windows in summer
anyway end result is a success, XE with a standard bulkhead and fully working heater
sorry for the lack of pics, i can take some if people are interested

Yeah please take some, this is something I hadn't even thought about when doing the installation. I had just always thought that the heater plumbing would be the easy part.
