Re: 1972 AVO Mexico coming back from near death experience

It didn't come easy cutting up new mexico wings to fit the bubble arches but at last they are done. To rub salt in the wounds I now see that Magnum are producing pressed steel complete bubble arch wings.

There is now light at the end of the tunnel (or is it the headlight of another train) I have now got the old girl booked in with Tim at Prostrip for her second dipping followed by corrosion prevention treatment.
So the next 10 days will be extremely busy to meet the target date.

Thanks guys for the comments, your right about the costs especially as I only paid £995 for it when it was 2 years old. There should be plenty of photo's coming soon as I need to have all the major works finished by the end of next week ready for the dipping.

Thanks, there is also a flush fitting cover that will be fitted secured by a couple of 1/4 turn Zuis clips for use when not on the track.

Vents on the front arches came from an article in a mag a few years back. Gary from Retromotorsport fitted them to a car called the conquerer.

So work has restated with both engine and fabrication work

The engine has been shipped down to TTS performance at Silverstone for work to the bottom end which should see the engine performing at around 400bhp. unfortunately once again they are waiting for parts.

The fabrication ongoing is to include the 15" tubs, round turrets. watts linkage , firewall etc at the rear end. so we will see how it goes
Fantastic work mate I'm carrying out a similar amount of work myself. I'm almost at the turret fitting stage and wondered if you would be able to post a pic of a measurement inside of the distance of your turrets from the door. Many thanks

Ok no worries thanks mate. I've got the rear chassis rails to sort so will be a touch longer as yet. I bet you are so looking forward to it coming back in primer 👍🏻

    Hi Mike
well you say it's a 6 point plus the "A" and "B" pillar cage strengthener gussetts, and is the cross brace across the front of the 4 link/rear seat brace not welded in place at the tunnel too.

    Certainly very nice indeed..

well back again. with all the fabrication work now completed its time to do a full fit up but this time I will be getting it running and everything working before the final strip and paint. I need to make sure that I do my best not to have to do any drilling or welding once painted

first photo is the heater box drain left in from my initial fit up, its from the original Mex and fits perfect between the engine and bulkhead. I'm led to believe this type is a rare

    2.2 quick rack fitted

along with the Corsa B power steering rack plus the bias pedal box, biggest problem here was the throttle pedal trying to get it around the 15" arches the gp4 pedal had to be chopped up and re-mastered.

Looks more "C" than "B" to me.
And are your Tension strut mounts not Compression strut mounts?

    Looking really good though....

Have you tried your doors with the seals in place, I see, like me, you've repaired a door and had work around the scuttle and A post. This is the only area I didn't think of trying before paint, now its real tight around the hinges and its too late to get the gaps opened.

Eventually the trial fit is complete, with only a few mods required before the painting, the only major problem I encountered was the intercooler.

The inlet and outlet were so close to the components that they had to be perfect but unfortunatly they weren't. So a wooden template was made up and it was back to Radtec who hopefully will be able to modify to suit.

Thanks Chris. My original plan was be a bit different and have an elaborate graphic design but i was not that brave so i have gone for the safe option of the original Sebring red . I have had a poster looking down at me in my garage throughout the build and it eventually got the better of me.

Looking really good mate can’t wait to see how this turns out.. I’ve gone for a similar look only opted for Vista orange as think it suits the black a little better. 👍🏻

Many thanks, I chose sebring as it's original and matches the tags, the strips will not though as it was bought with the custom pack so it didn't have the full mexico stripes., I am however planning on the inside being grey giving me the option's at a later date,

Twiddling my thumbs while waiting for the shell to come back from painting I decided to do a bit of remedial work on some of the painted parts I had bought . During the build I was surprised on thepoor finish quality on some new parts.
I started with some remedial cosmetic work on the strut brace. I didn't know if I should paint it, hydographic dip or vinyl wrap. In the end I went for something different so I tried carbon skinning which was new for me. It was time consuming but we'll worth it, I'm pleased with the end result

Very cool work...ive got some carbon skinning to do..(new to me as well)...can i ask if you used black resin on the part first...or painted it black or non of the above....i ask because i read that you might see throughsome of the weave..so an undercoat of black helps this....cheers mark
