Thanks rob this is crazy when all you have to do is go round any car show and see whats out there.
Looks like i will just have to stick to the track and shows which is a crying shame. Or the other options is to put my the mex running gear back on or just sell it,

Re: 1972 AVO Mexico coming back from near death experience

what is the issue ? the engine or the rest of the mods ? if you take away the engine and gearbox the rest is pretty standard period mods a lot of work but as you suggest revert back to mex running gear get the paper work and then the rest is your choice Mmmmm the whole situation is crazy given you have owned the car for so long and have photo proof of the work being carried out etc.

Yeah it's complete madness. I was thinking along the same lines, just take it to shows and use it as a Trackday car. The problem with that idea is you would have to trailer it everywhere as it's not technically road legal is it..

It's a brilliant job finished btw. Well done

Think ill just have a bit of fun with the last few track days of the year, it would have been nice to keep the numbers together i suppose if i did put it on the road i would not be able to park it without the fear of loosing it.

Anyway a month or so to catch up with jobs around the house then begin project no 2

Yes. Austin healey 3000mk3 1964. Locked away for 20yrs another retirement project. I will not make the mistake with this one as all the running gear will be standard.

    Nice...

Funny that, that's what the DVSA guy said he'd got that I was speaking to on Saturday, amongst a few others too.

is it not possible to get the car inspected as is then you will have the paper work correct before committing ?

Had work colleague had an austin healey 3000 dry state import that he restored.

Remember to post up the pics

Question on the water rail. I have the same set up and plan on using a heater, but the heater outlet on the housing has a tapped m8 hole, threaded incase you want to blank it. But is the m8 hole large enough for enough flow if you use a heater or do you drill it out??

Re: 1972 AVO Mexico coming back from near death experience

Its been a while guys but since my last post I have taken the Mex to TTS Performance onto the dyno, a couple of test days and a couple of track days just when I thought it was all over I hit a few issues, firstly on the rolling road the engine did not make the power I imagined it would it only made 298 bhp instead of the 350+ I had hoped for. The main reason for this was very high inlet temp caused by a two main things
    A) being a simple schoolboy error on my part being the fact I had put a pressure cap on the radiator instead of non pressure thus not venting into the header from the top of the rad.
    B) air intake was beside the engine so the ambient air temp was too high. I knew this at the time but as the engine bay is so tight it was difficult to draw air from the front.
So it was back home and do a few mods, Plan a route for the cold air intake meant a bit of cutting about so out came the Engine to make a bit of room so I could cut a hole in the inner wing and pick up cold air through a vent under the o\s bumper

I used flexi pipe for this but may go for fabricated tube later.

The next issue I had was excessive oil venting into the catch tank. This was caused because I fitted a billet breather instead of the original manufacturer’s breather. The reason I did this was because of the small valve and outlet on the original one’ big mistake as the billet unit had next to no oil /Vapour separation. So I decided to modify the original by removing the valve and welding in a Male Adapter this worked great and sorted the problem.

The photo above shows the billet breather next to the original, looked good and gave more space when fitted but was useless.

That was two of the issues from the dyno day sorted but while the engine was out I decided to fit some kent cams and have the manifold ceramic coated.

Re: 1972 AVO Mexico coming back from near death experience

never a truer word spoken WILDO

That was is engine back in and it was ready for the first shakedown

Picture of the engine bay now showing the ceramic manifold. you may see a difference from an earlier photo that the carbon hydrographic dipped rocker cover has gone and back to crinkle finish, although it did look good unfortunately it didn't stand up to the heat

now ready to see how it actually drives two test days and a track day at Teesside Autodrome then onto Croft for a track day

Re: 1972 AVO Mexico coming back from near death experience

This was nearly the last of the track for this year another issue was quickly highlighted at Croft , because of its so much bigger than Teesside I found that I ran of gearing quickly, so decided to change the CWP . I had fitted a 5.1 / 1 so I changed it to 4.1 /1 , I gave it another go and there was great improvement . I now think its the driver now rather than the car.

What a stunning motor, such attention to detail, it’s a credit to you and your work quality.
Did the Zetec really make that much power from just the S/C?

On another note, because your not going down the road registration route because of bureaucracy, there’s nothing stopping you putting your historic regs plates on if your only using on track days

Many thanks for your comments, im hoping to get a run on the dyno shortly to see what i have ended up with, i was told that the standard crate engine should have been ok up to the 300bhp with standard rods and pistonsbut as i wanted a bit more i upgraded the rods and lowered the comp with 9/1 pistons, fitted the single 70mm jenvey throttle body , 630cc injectors , kent fast road sports cam and ofcourse the supercharger. I do hope i get between the 350/400 bhp.
If not im just going to live with it,
    Maybe

That is it spring has sprung and time to get the old girl out. What better way to start the year than a feature in RetroFord mag April edition

I was watching an interesting car build on you tube were they used a fly by wires throttle body, got me thinking about throttle blips etc. They used a BRZ throttle pedal

I was wondering simmilar, why didnt you just use a DBW throttle and integrated paddle shift system.

With DBW, the ECU can do engine speed matching on downshit, not just kick the throttle. It can also time the actuator, blip and cut events together for a smooth up and down shift.

I suspect it would also have been cheaper than that throttle setup and the geartronics system.

Had to have the car inspected to verify it was the original type 49 shell , and supply mountain of photos and original documentation.

Got there in the end though

1972 AVO Mexico coming back from near death experience

I'm running 18 silvertop in mk1 escort. I thought the same thing and questioned the outlet. However I fitted the heater pipes to the rail and the heater worked great. I struggle to get engine up to temp tho so sure the heater would be much more efficient if I could. Either need to partially cover the rad and/or fit a higher ° thermostat.
    Suggestions??

Great news. And they never questioned the fact that your original type 49 shell had new floors, arches, transmission tunnel, front and rear suspension mounts modified plus the rest of it.

So it can be done then, who was it inspected by, dvsa themselves or just a trusty mot guy?
So they kind of made a mockery of their own regulations then.
So I'm also assuming that as it's technically back on it's original plate it is now both tax (well historic tax anyway) and mot exempt?

Sounds like there's hope for the rest of us yet then...
