cosworth yb coil on plug conversion

as i was now on my 3rd coilpack failure, dont know why but they dont last long even using original beru version, i decided to see how easy it would be to fit coil on plug to eliminate the misfires and bring it more up to date, every modern high performance petrol engine runs these now.
clint on here does a nifty conversion with extended plug tops so you can run denso motorbike cops and use the insulator with the rubber extended, without the need for cam cover mods works great, but the plugs needed for these cops have to be threaded and that leaves fords 071c as the only plug suitable

now these plugs are utter shite you have to buy about 16 to get 4 that will actually work, when you take the duds back to the ford dealer and other suppliers[surly they all cant be duds] they will tell you that you fitted them wrongyeah i managed to put them in upside down just as well there cheap

with the cop conversion working great it was just the plugs that let it down,so much so that i refitted a new coilpack and a set of these ngk iridiums, now these are the danglies, seems to run better straight away

now works perfectly but only a matter of time before the coilpack fecks up again so i thought i will get the ngk with threaded tops and refit the copsshould be the best of both worlds, only thing is these ngk are not available in 16mm plug with threaded top to fit a yb,phone call to ngk technical and the helpfull chappie said the one im looking for size wise and threaded top is only avaliable in 21mm

so bought a set and decided to make them fit

as its boxing day and im bored, whipped the cam cover off and up to geordies to use his milling machine, took 6mm off the plug towers and machined the plug hole out to 26mm

also machined down a 21mm plug socket to 25.5mm so it will go through the plug hole

the head where the plug sits also needs a bit machined from it to square up the sides as most heads are not equal in this area,a 21mm plug is a lot bigger diameter and will leave no room to get a plug socket in,thankfully i had done it to this head when i modified it.

the brass extenders are now no longer needed with the cam cover modified, and the cops can fit direct to the ngk plug with the insulator fully home.

now wired up and ready for the rolling road setup session

big thanks to clint from bhp and the ngk technical man without whom none of this would have been possible

The way I look at it , is if you spray petrol at flame you get a fantastic flame (coil) throw a bucket at it and the flame goes out ( coil pack ) that's by someone who works with cossy so everyday

Re: cosworth yb coil on plug conversion

There are loads of plugs either Denso or NGK available with screw tops, definitely no need to go to 21mm stuff.

eg this is a pretty cold plug ( equivalent to NGK 9 ), iridium and removable tip

    http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk/denso-ir...park-plug-ik27

I'd be more concerned as to why you're eating coilpacks though. What coil were you using and how were you firing it ?

Re: cosworth yb coil on plug conversion

steve, thanks, your needing to get a job with ngk technical, but i suppose ngk wont recommend another manufacturer, that denso one does look like it would fit, would have saved me machining a 21mm plug socket.
the coil pack i was using are a vauxhall/peugot type,i think there are a lot of fakes in the supply chain and even the original beru ones fail after a while,i will find the number of it.
its fired by a motec m4 with twin channel amp, these denso stick coils are fired the same but with 2 twin channel amps in waisted spark style

Re: cosworth yb coil on plug conversion

IMO it's more likely whatever dwell time you were running them at was the problem.

some NGK plugs will have screw tops too, those sparkplugs websites are actually fairly good to trawl through to get information from about each plug, and they do seem to have good pictures of the actual plug they're talking about.

Denso make great plugs though, I'd have no issue running them vs NGK, and I do at the minute on my own car.

Think yourself luck to actually have a plug choice...... us Zetec owners get one type and it ain't a threaded top! Has a damn taper thread hence the one of one status! Agree with Steve - dwell time is deffo a likely cause as coil packs are mostly bulletproof - 3.0mS is a usual max. number.

Yank engines seem to favour taper seats...no idea why when washers are more common throughout the rest of the world

Or is it a taper elsewhere ?

Even the LS normally takes taper seat plugs, but normal washer plugs fit and work perfectly anyway.

Re: cosworth yb coil on plug conversion

Ive just bout a Link ECU and would like to go this route,

Just to confirm what denso coil packs are you using? 129700-4800's? (GSXR- 600)

And you need to bore the plug holes to 26mm to fit these? (Decking them 6mm being an option to not need adapters)

Have you had any issues with this setup at all? heard the yaris style ones are not as good and can have problems. Are you running wasted spark?

    Cheers

The link does not support direct firing of coils, use Honda K20 intelligent coils as they almost bolt in and the link will fire them directly, we have the connectors in stock

Hello, i bought my ECU off you a few weeks ago - do you have a shop front that i could visit and have a chat? I need to get pretty much all my loom plugs and supplies so i can hopefully get it built over xmas

Are the K20 coils okay to be used with wasted spark ?

    cheers

We do right near brands BUT although its open I am off recovering at the moment, feel free to add me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/gaskin

What ECU did you buy ? They are fine for wasted spark but if you brought a link then you can run them individually and save a lot of plug wear.

Yes all standard pickups, just select RS500 in the trigger selection.

The extreme has 8 ignition outputs, you need to use the 4 on the A loom you can use the others for other things.

Re: cosworth yb coil on plug conversion

I am currently in the process of going COP on my yb, I don't know what plug to run.
On my Cortina i used to run c57c, but they started to fail at around 25psi.
Later started to use motorcraft 071c , which are great, I don't know if i can still use them on the K20 COP.

    Any help?

    Thanks
