I run without power steering in my tarmac rally car with very sticky tyres and loads of castor, and it doesn't bother me at all, however i mountain bike and box so i have a reasonable level of upper-body fitness. PAS to me seems like an unnecessary complication to have in the car, but almost all Irish rally boys have PAS and swear by it!

It can be difficult to park the car in service, especially after a few hours of rallying, but this is something i can live with. My mother has a 1999 suzuki swift that didn't come with PAS, so i fitted a corsa column to that and it made the car much easier for her (and me!) to drive.

So to summarize... i don't want PAS in my rally car, but i wouldn't dream of owning a road-car/daily-driver without it.

As said above most rally escorts here have PS as it helps being able to come out of junctions with one hand steering the other changing gear.

for me its a no brainer , if it feel on the heavy side then get it fitted ( money well spent ) you wont look back , if your not sure have a play in a similar car with it fitted , if your headin up north give us abell and have a play in mine

Thanks for the replies. Pretty much as I thought...my 205gti rally car didn't have pas but the 106 cup car did and you needed it with the plate diff, but they were front wheel drive. I have driven an escort without pas and it felt fine. I think I will get the car built and go from there. I am doing a custom loom so I can put the wiring there incase I want to add it later.
