My Mk1 Escort (Be prepared for a lot of reading!)

Back in 2006 when I bought the car and had Just transported to my house.

As you can see, It looked as though it was almost destined for the scrap yard haha! (not by todays standards mind, but back then people generally didn't take on escorts like this.

As you can see not in the best of shapes however the roof doors and quarters were not too bad!...... Wish the same could be said for the floors!

First things first was to sort out the lack of floor issue and the reasonably holey middle chassis section!
As you can see the new chassis section has been fixed into place and the floors have been chopped out along with the sill thats just about to go missing !
(car is braced between rear quarters and front splash panels and by the chassis underneath to make sure it didn't twist)

Floorpans and Sill tacked into place, at this point I was using gasless which in short is absolutely S**T so decided to get some argoshield before I fully completed welding the pans into place!

Next step was to sort the front end so splash pans, top plates (full length), Underwing Kits, Front pan, Slam Pan, Radiator Panel and Bulkhead quarters!

With the car strengthened enough to put on the rollover spit it was time for more welding surprise surprise haha!

Re: My Mk1 Escort (Be prepared for a lot of reading!)

Splash panel and hinge panel welded into place

Upon trying to weld with argo gas I realised that the bay really wasn't good enough (kept blowing holes no matter how low I had my welder) so I decided it was time for a new bay.... at this time you couldn't get brand new ones so had to source a really good second hand one!

With that sorted out it was time to source some mexico lip wings and doors along with a lot of other panels as some knob broke into my garage and stole loads of bits, but when I sourced all the stuff I needed (set me back over a year) and a lot of cash it was time to start lining the panels up to the shell!

as you can see this is when I was playing about with all the panels together to make sure everything would be in place in the correct position (not welding it all on and then realising the bonnet doesn't close haha!

with the panels finally aligned and fitting nicely it was time to weld them in! for some reason I don't have photographs of that stage for some obscure reason, maybe I was too focused on the huge task ahead of bare metalling the whole car !

As if this wasn't hard enough it took a good few days to do because the car had been painted previously in a paint which I can only describe as woolworths repaint! it was too thick and kept clogging the DA discs! but after a lot of perseverance I finally got it all off!

Ignore the random pictures added below I don't know how they got there haha!

In amongst all the work going on I sourced two mk2 roll top seats at a reasonable price and thought they would suit the car well once refurbished

Luckily I knew a good upholsterer who sorted them out for me at a reasonable price

In the meantime I came across a new old stock door (off a mk2 van) and converted it to fit my saloon) as you do!

Finished off with a little skim of filler just to even out all the little imperfections in the repair areas and started the primer stage

Re: My Mk1 Escort (Be prepared for a lot of reading!)

Forgot to show in the last part of my thread I bought a 1700 crossflow with a high lift cam stage 3 head (big valve) and twin 40's along with duplex chain and a couple of other uprated bits to handle the extra fuel and combustion etc etc

so to handle the extra power I bought a type 9 gearbox! some modification needed to shell of course (this was before i started the primer haha)

I then realised this wasn't no ordinary type 9 its a heavy duty one out of the v6 with the uprated roller bearing and a good set of ratios 2.8 first and a 0.87 fifth (the reason why I wanted the box as my diff is a 4.1) but this then meant that yet again more modifications needed haha!

The input shaft is obviously longer on the V6 so had to strip the box and get it down to the right size so thanks to Johnathan Hughes and his machining skills it's now down to the right size!

My Shaft on the left machined to sierra 4 pot (short shaft) we have yet to find out if it works! It should do I will inform you guys haha

Underneath prepped and painted with tinted stone chip

Underneath then sprayed over stone chip with 2k colour

Engine bay and front panel sprayed

GAZ adjustable inserts for the capri/ RS2k struts

Struts built with vented 2.8i Disks and -2" springs M16 spaced callipers to be fitted!

AVO dampers for the rear along with single leafs off a mk2 (which I had to change the hangers for)

    Nearly forgot to add these!

I had to put the lights in to see how well it all lined up (I loose sleep over shut lines and light positions in comparison to bootlid) but I wont be loosing sleep over this well impressed!
