Zetec on type 9 - starter issues

So I've been having endless issues with starter motor mesh. If fitted a 14mm spacer between the bell housing and the starter, tried another 2L pinto starter, fitted the steel spacer that goes between the engine and gearbox, still no luck.
The starters swing making a loud grinding sound and then just seem to jam up

    2L Blacktop Zetec
    2L Zetec Flywheel
    Type 9 box and bellhousing
    Starter model : Prestolite EL25192 - 10 tooth

Problem is I cant just go out and buy a LRS707 as the 1800 Sierra's where not sold in out country.

Any help ? Is this the right 2L starter I'm using ?

Re: Zetec on type 9 - starter issues

Some good info her for Pinto and Zetec starters, looks the same other than the spacer
I use a version of this starter for my Zetec and 2000e gearbox in my Anglia and I like it very much

Re: Zetec on type 9 - starter issues

Thanks - I've seen that and yes it doesn't make sense why my starter shouldn't work with the spacer.

I bought the flywheel seperatly from the engine, Im wondering if all the Zetec flywheels are the same size (Outside diameter) ?

Re: Zetec on type 9 - starter issues

you could of course modify the bell housing to accept the zetec starter, it has the advantage of being away from the exhaust so gives less trouble when hot.....its also not a difficult thing to do. you just need the sandwich plate from the donor car to act as a template for the bolt alignment.

then fix it to the bell housing as a template, cut some steel plate to shape and weld into place.....after cutting a bit away from the bell housing to suit....

here the motor in place......once done fit the bell housing to the car then refit the motor as normal......works really well one 2.0 zetec has had this mod done for over three years and 20000 miles and no issues yet......

i used the motor fitted like this to make sure everything could bolt up correctly and to make sure it all was aligned correctly....the bell housing is steel and seems to take a weld ok......

Re: Zetec on type 9 - starter issues

i have made my own....i cut a manifold flange out of 3mm steel....by hand. it was a fair bit of effort. i then cut the injector plate from the donor manifold, got some 1mm sheet steel and folded it into a 3" X 3" tube

the inlet runners are new exhaust pipe at about 32mm diameter....

I have even made myself a fuel tank from 1mm sheet steel, which will accept the standard ford fuel pump on its correct mounting....so easy to swap if it gives trouble. the tank works out at 46L or about 10 gallons.

Re: Zetec on type 9 - starter issues

the thing is i have a couple of CVH starters i acquired for my project.....but changed my mind as i want the exhaust side to be clear of both the alternator and the starter to help prevent trouble in use....the CVH starters are promised to another builder who doesn’t fancy modifying the bell housing the same way as my self.

You sir are an inspiration, was going to fork out Hundreds of pounds getting a starter motor to fit my Blacktop with a type 9 gearbox/bellhousing,,,,but after seeing your bellhousing mod,for twenty quid I've ordered a plasma cut ring ( will do 2 bellhousings ) and can use the original starter motor in the original position...
    Thanks

Re: Zetec on type 9 - starter issues

glad i found this, i looked at it today and had thoughts of doing similar, now im pretty happy to go ahead with it, nice off the shelf starter in Australia, i did some mocking up with the 2L pinto one i rebuilt for the motor that im replacing and it was all looking a bit of a pain, especially in regards to the sump mods im working on, thanks

Craig , maybe check with Clive Wilmot , I think he's done a couple of these conversions . Also check on FB there's a RWD Zetec group that's quite active.
