    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

    Curborough Sprint Sun 21st September

Back to Curborough again for a 2 lap Sprint and after doing about 40 laps here a few weeks earlier I was hoping I'd learnt something

Tony was out again and also Dean Maddock in his Pinto powered Mk2

I knew I wouldn't get anywhere near Tony and should be ahead of Dean if I kept it on the track, so I thought I'd try changing up the gears without the clutch in an effort to gain some more speed

1st Practice was ok at 65.22s with 2nd Practice better at 64.84s, nearly down to my best time of 64.72s set in July, I was having an interesting time trying to figure out how much to lift as I changed gear

I had a gentle walk round the track during lunch with Alan and Juliet who were double driving the Mini, trying to work out better lines - Alan was keen to try and get the 1400cc Mod Prod Class record and move up the Overall Championship positions, Juliet was just out for some experience on her 4th ever event

1st Timed Run and I found a bit more speed round the first left hander after our walk, only to arrive at the next corner a lot quicker than normal, scrabbled round the next few corners, down the straight, braked a bit too late to turn in for the 2nd lap, and reached the finish in 64.42s at 90mph Not using the clutch was giving me more acceleration down the straight but I still can't get out of the hairpin tidily, always spending too much time going sideways not forwards

Meanwhile Tony set a storming 61.55s with Dean on 67.50s, Juliet did a steady 78.23s and Alan cruised in a lap early after hearing a worrying clonk from the front right corner round the first bend

Before the next Timed Run, the Mini was stripped down to check the flywheel, clutch and everything else important on the front end but we couldn't find anything, so Juliet was told that the car was perfect and to give it a good test drive before Alan's last run

2nd Timed Run and everything worked a bit better, but I could still only manage 64.37s, comfortably behind Tony and comfortably ahead of Dean

Juliet was a couple of seconds quicker on 76.33s and Alan just went for it in his usual style, beating the record by 0.03s with 60.97s

So another good day out, but now there was no way I could beat Tony in the Championship with just Prescott to go the following weekend

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

No arches, but definitely some wider rubber for next year

This year I've been running 7's and they're pretty much worn out now, so I'll get some 8's for next year's season

Other than that Fly will be going on a diet and another winter rebuild as there are a couple of cracks that need sorting

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

    Prescott Sun 28th September

This was the final round of the Midland Speed Championship of the year and I was looking forward to driving Prescott for the first time

I arrived very early and had a gentle walk up the hill which looked very interesting with a good mixture of corners

1st Practice - the start was delayed by an hour as we waited for the fog to lift, but the hill was nice and dry. I had a steady run up the hill in a time of 53.97s, Fly trying to go straight on at every corner didn't do my confidence any good, but a lot of people had the same problem due to the track being cold
And even Gary Thomas, recently crowned Midland Speed Champion for the 3rd year in a row, went off in his Lotus Elise on the last corner, sliding 40ft down a grass bank into some bushes but the only damage was to his pride and the rear diffuser

2nd Practice - the sun was out and the track giving a lot more grip, I pushed on a bit to finish in 52.32s, a lot better

1st Timed Run - off the line reasonably well in 2.56s, not as much grip here as some hills I've been to, under the bridge at 61mph and into the first hairpin, Ettore's, in 15.43s, well ahead of my practice times, up to the steep hairpin left at Pardon, attacked the Esses a bit more and Fly turned in well for the last corner, Semicircle, so I could accelerate earlier, drifting gently on the way out and crossed the finish in 51.02s, another good improvement (but still 2s off Tony's Renault 5, but he'd been up here a few times before)

2nd Timed Run - hoping to get another 0.5s quicker, I got a good start only to be Red Flagged at the bridge after a TVR lost all gears near the top of the hill, so I was directed to continue slowly round to Ettore's, back through the crossover track towards the start, back into the paddock and lined up for a re-run
Off I went again, confident my tyres were nicely warmed up by now, 2.48s off the start, lifted a bit early under the bridge at 60mph and into Ettore's in 15.32s, tried to brake late into Pardon and again for the Esses, and got a nice drift round Semicircle again to cross the finish in 50.14s a lot better than I expected

So another enjoyable event to finish the season with, I finished 11th overall in the Championship (Tony was 5th and Alan 2nd in his Mini ), 2nd in Class behind Tony, 3rd in the Consistency award (the difference between your 2 Timed Runs at each event counting for this one) and comfortably won the Classic Ford class again ahead of Windy who only did 3 events

I dunno Glen .. at every round of the Midland speed championship theres a class custom made for Matt and Windy's car .. infact it was Windy's idea, you can even compete and beat your brother in it ... and you may just do it,

Not a lot going on this month but I've finally fitted some new wheels studs to the front hubs - Fly was still running the studs I bought her with, std length Mk1 studs which aren't that sensible when some of my wheels need spacers

And I found some nice pics of Loton Park

There's a provisional calendar out for 2009 - first events are Harewood and Croft on Easter Weekend (12/13th April)

I had an enjoyable time at Brands on Wednesday afternoon, meeting up with my brother Derek in his Luego Velocity (a 7 type kit car) and a few of his friends, Russ and brother Jason in an immaculate Rally Prepared Mk1 Escort, and Andy in a Porsche Carrera 4 Turbo, and our Dad came along to spectate

After the briefing we all had to do a couple of convoy laps behind the safety car to learn the track - I knew where it went but last time I drove round was at a Sprint about 15 years ago, so this was quite handy

It was an open pit lane meaning we could come in and out as we liked, so I jumped in with Derek to start with, not having been in his car before - powered by a standard Sierra injection engine running a 32/36 carb and Megajolt ignition, it didn't have that much power but with a good set of Yokohama's and well set up suspension it cornered very well so we were overtaking a lot of cars out of Druids but were dropping back down the straights

I then went out on my own in Fly and did quite a few laps, overtaking various Skylines until a pink Renault 5 Turbo expired in a large cloud of smoke and the Red Flags came out. Back in the paddock I was just about to fit the slicks when it started to drizzle steadily so I stuck to the wets for the rest of the day

Russ had been out for a while in the Mk1, then came in to let Jason have a go and Derek went out at the same time so I watched from the paddock. Derek started in front but after a few laps let Jason past, then the next lap Jason had a bit of a wiggle through Paddock Hill bend and slid off into the gravel trap. No harm was done but the Red Flags came out again while he was towed out

By now the track was getting wet, so I took Derek out in Fly, there was quite a lot of traffic but we gradually worked through it, everyone being sensible and letting us past, but after about 10 laps it was getting a bit dodgy braking into Paddock Hill bend due to the water (I had a GPS speedo fitted and it was showing 105 at the braking point) so I came in before I did something stupid

Meanwhile Andy was following us round in his Porsche and stayed out to get some quicker laps in

When it stopped raining and a dry line started to appear, we all went out together but it seemed that every time we got up to speed, someone else fell off into a gravel trap - first a quick Saxo, then an old Mini nearly reached the tyre wall through the gravel and finally an R300 bike engined Caterham 7 went straight on at Druids - it was a complete coincidence that Fly was 2 foot off his rear bumper when he did this as I was lining up to overtake on the way out, or maybe he was so surprised to see a Mk2 behind him he forgot to brake

At the end I took Russ out in Fly so he could see what she went like, and was quite impressed

    Pics to follow next week

I also went to see Ron at HT on the way, to see the new Rolling Road and pick his brains about a couple of things, and came away with a rather bling inner wing dry sump tank for Fly

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

I've started taking bits off Fly to finish off DVY so after clearing various bits from the engine bay I had a good look at the cracks in the driver's side strut top that had appeared after Fat Albert last summer (and has been covered by heat shield ever since )

I can feel the crack from the other side as well and it's very crunchy all round here so it looks like I'll be busy before this season starts

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

After a rather busy year in DVY, I finally made a start on FLY's winter rebuild tonight

Removed the wing (attached by about 20 bolts)

With the strut out of the way, it was time to remove the cover plate which had been fitted about 15 years ago to reveal the original strut top (or what's left of it )

The strut top pan looks ok - the main rust is where the original inner wing and the cover plate were welded together

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

    Thanks

It's nearly 3 years ago I did the last rebuild, but this is a different area and hopefully if it's done right this time (with a little help from some friends) she'll last another 10 years before needing another one

Tonight I dug out the inner wings sections I'd saved from the 4 door I choppped up previously

Started with a mint strut top (even with original chassis stamp on it)

Cleaned all the waxoyl from round the spot welds

And after 45min drilling them out I ended up with this

Fits perfectly, only problem is it doesn't quite cover all the area the previous plate did

Obviously it's not going to be welded on top like this, but at least now I've got a decent sized and shaped panel to do the repairs with

What surprised me most was only finding 8 spot welds on top of the inner wing, no wonder moisture gets in and they rot out from underneath

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

Got some more work done on Fly today

Removed all the rusty metal round the strut top and wire brushed everything in sight

Then had a quick look at one of the rear turrets, cleaned it up and found a hole

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

Made some progress this weekend with some help from Carrie and Guy

5 hours welding by Guy Sat afternoon and the worst side was done - top plate is puddle welded through the spot weld holes, overlapped and seam welded to the original inner wing inside and out, and the edges of the strut tower uprights are stitch welded underneath the plate - it should now be stronger than it ever was

While I investigated the better side and found just as much rot so decided to cut it all out as well

Another 4 hours of welding by Guy today and the other side was done

So a bit of cleaning up to do, before further reinforcement takes place

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Rally Car - FLY

Finished the front end reinforcements today

Extra top plates on both sides - these are Rally Design ones with about 1" taken off all round so they look more like RS top plates

Then added some box section underneath instead of the usual strengthening plates

My buddy in Germany also has an E-class wagon and that car is TIGHT MB and Audi make some nice looking wagons, you cant tell them apart from the sedan when you look at them from the front - for some reason I dont feel the same way about BMW.Congrats on the purchase.

Re: GavinRs Mk2 Rally Car FLY

Started work on the rear turrets - filled in the hole and added some triangulation

Then got a bit carried away - chopped the rear stays and diagonal off the cage, removed the main hoop, ground off all the old welds and refitted it

And I've made one new rear stay to link in to the turrets, got to make the other and hopefully a cross diagonal before welding it all to the main hoop

Re: GavinRs Mk2 Rally Car FLY

Finished the other rear stay and tacked it in place

While I was working on that side, I investigated some paint bubbles at the bottom of the C pillar, somewhere I've patched a few times before, and removed all the paint and rust to see how bad it was

Over Christmas I had a look in my parents shed, dug out a quarter panel off Fly's original shell and cut out a repair section

Re: GavinRs Mk2 Rally Car FLY

Got some more done on the cage this week, tacking each bit in place then removing it before welding it all the way round

It's taking a bit longer like this but it's a lot easier to weld

Just got to fit a harness bar then I can weld it all onto the main hoop

And I've finished the rear stay mounts on both sides

One thing about doing all this welding, it keeps my hands warm when it's -12 outside
