    Watch For Free

Whats this about then? well its Marshaling at Motorsport Events, and it's not really about getting a free days spectating its about doing something that you enjoy and getting fullfilment out of it. Marshals are the guys in orange overalls who wave the correct flags at the side of the tracks to the lunatics inside the cars that there is a problem ahead, they also keep 2 drivers apart when they have taken each other off, they also help save Lives, and yes on a good day they can spend the whole day watching cars racing around a circuit without having to leave their posts to heave a car out of the gravel etc. They also run the cars in the pits, startlines and various other places at races, rallys, sprints, hillclimbs etc

Marshals are some of the most respected men and women at the race track, without them there would be no motoracing. Do you like watching Motorsport, like being close enough to smell it, taste it, feel it as the cars go thundering by, then take a few moments to read through these links.

And have a think about joining this group of motorsport "professionals". It dosn't matter what form of Motorsport you like, there are Marshals needed in all the catagories.

As I am sort of involved in this here is a list of training days , they are a good source of info and the people who run them are some of the most knowledgable people and are very approachable and are VERY happy to see new people

also http://silkrallyradio.biz/2006_events.htm is a list of events from many branches of motorsport

    And then there were two!

Im also a marshal mainly at Silverstone. I'm still young and fit but have been doing it for 6 - 7 seasons so far. Dealt with a number of things, including a fight this year, it was even televised.

Ask us anything you like. (except how flies land on the ceiling)

    Cheers,

hi guys.. if you sign up to be a marshal can you specifiy your preferred place to do it? or would it be a case fo signing up for a particular series or championship and then being comitted to do all the races in that?

sorry if it's answered in Gary's links - not had a chance to read them yet, but will do later on today

You would be given a list of dates and meetings (and maybe some training days) and then its up to you which you can attend .

Some circuits struggle at times and are grateful for any help even if its 1 day a year .

Adding to Matrix's post there, the procedure is that you would recive forms with each club's meetings on it for the entire year, at all the circuits. you can then pick and choose which ones you want to do. so you could stick to your nearest circuit, or go "on tour" around most of the circuits in Britain - all of which will give you a warm welcome.

Some Specialist marshals do however stick to one series like the BTCC and follow it, but these are a minority, and preform roles such as the Pit lane speed guns, setting the grid etc.

Having said that, you need a minimum level of experience to cover the British Grand Prix (15 days, and 2 training days), and other events like the Goodwood festival of speed and the revival meeting are usually oversubscribed.

    Hope that answers more Questions,

    Kev.

    Re: Watch For Free

it certainly does, thanks. not really interested in the GP, it was more a case of it being slightly prohibitive if it meant that once you'd signed up you were obliged to drive hundreds of miles to marshal some of the events on a series.

    Re: Watch For Free

    No worries.

However lots of marshals will travel great distances to get to meetings - up to and beyond 500 mile round trips! That's their choice though, and if you're happier staying closer to home there's no problem with that.

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen, if anyone would like contact names and addresses of who to contact or how to start marshalling, or even to arrange a tester day to see if you like it, please drop me an e-mail to s.c.green@btinternet.com

Can I say a huge thanks to the forum hosts for advertising the need for more marshals and I look forward to hearing from many of you over the coming months.

    Hi Sharon,

Brands Hatch is my local circuit as I live in Faversham. If you really want to spend a day and give it a try drop me an e-mail with some dates in March/April and I will make arrangements for you to spend a day with me if you like?

    Hello Stephen,
I'm not quite sure why its taken me this long to notice you on here! Its mark mercedes from tentenths. Looking forward to some more fun and frolics on the track days. I've really enjoyed the last 3 seasons marshalling trackside and on a few rallies. I'm out with Mr Briggs & co this coming weekend on the Cambrian Stages in Penmachno North Any more folks fancy coming along and seeing what rally marshals do in the forests?

    Re: Watch For Free

If anyone wants to find out what rallying is about, the Tunnocks Tour of Mull takes place 10th to 12th October on the sunny isle of Mull. www.2300club.org for all the info for marshalling and spectating.
If you sign up as a marshal the organisers will pay your ferry crossing (£58 for car and one passenger return),and contribute towards petrol, as well as bags of goodies for all marshals who turn up. There is a huge shortage of marshals this year for this awesome event.
I've just booked my ferry crossing on the friday from Oban to Craignure and return on the sunday afternoon. www.calmac.co.uk for ferry info. Its a good idea to book fairly soon as the boats get full very quickly towards the date.
Signing on takes place on the friday at the village hall in Tobermory and the rally starts on friday night.
I went last year with Steve G. from Track n Road and MikeStorrar. Its a superb rally and some amazing scenery.
Please take a look at the links and get yourself up there. Its well worth the trip. Accommodation shouldn't be too difficult to find if you look on the 2300 club site. Ideally travel to Oban thursday for an early crossing friday morning, as by then all the rally crews are already on the island for scrutineering so the ferries arent full of rally crews.

contacts for chief marshal/asst chief marshal as follows: Simon Bibby simonb@2300club.org for chief marshal, Mark Wilkinson markw@2300club.org asst chief marshal. Please contact either of them for enquiries about marshalling on the rally.

    Re: Watch For Free

Next saturday the Promenade Stages take place on the roads along the seafront at New Brighton on the Wirral. www.wallaseymc.com for info. If anyone fancies dipping their toes in the marshalling world and maybe in the sea if you are brave enough then contact marshal@wallaseymc.com and get your name on the list.
The event starts at 8.15am on the saturday on closed roads along the prom. Signing on at 6.15 am and briefing at 6.45am. Location for sign on is opposite service area OS 108/301942. Roads close 7.30 am til 6pm so you need to be in position before 7.30 am as you can't take your car into stage after this.
Its an awesome tarmac rally and very fast and spectacular.
No experience neccessary as you will be put with experienced marshals on the day.
I shall be there somewhere if anyone wants to come along and help. Yuo will be given a set of instructions and reflective tabard if you havent got one. Bring food with you and be prepared for all weathers. Also a whistle and some sort of decent footwear is good idea and a pair of heat resistant gloves and some sort of hat for sun and rain protection.
