    arp block studs

Hi peeps, newbie here. I have a 205 block and 2wd head. Going to be rebuilding engine and going for approx 330 hp. I'm thinking of using arp studs and nuts plus A1 head gasket. Is it true it's best to fit 6 studs? I have head this is done as water jackets close to some threads? Any ideas please. Cheers.

    Re: arp block studs

you are confusing long studs with arp's, long studs can only be fitted to a 200 block which requires machining, i think 6 long studs are used up to 500 and 10 are used for anything over that.
Arp studs just replace the standard head bolts there have been some cases where the block has cracked around some of the head bolt holes with the arp kit, at the power level you want why not just use standard head bolts and a group A head gasket, i used standard head bolts and a group A head gasket with my T34.63 and approx 370 bhp and had no problems.

    Re: arp block studs

I have a 200 block that's cracked round two bolt holes and into the water jacket. The 200 block looks no stronger round there than a std Pinto. Mountune used 6 long studs through into the bottom of the block on their Escort WRC engines.

The advantage of the short stud as opposed to a head bolt is, you know that the stud's screwed right down to the bottom of the thread in the block unlike a bolt.

If anyone has a successful method of repair for cracks around stud holes I would be glad to hear from them.

i have heard you can save a 200 block thats cracked around the bolt holes by long studding it, not sure if they stitch the cracks first, you can try ringing some of the engine builders and asking there opinions but i wouldn't scrap the block just yet.

Yes thanks for that Kymic, I have made inquiries about having the the block long studded. The cost is in the region of £750 with studs.

I am amazed now a what prices they are asking for some of the engine blocks on the market.

    Re: arp block studs

Cheers for that Kymic. I have no idea what happens to the cracks, they would be still there from the waterway into the bolt thread.I can't see metal stitching being the answer.

My block also needs skimming as it looks warped around where the cracks are, it has been machined for Coopers rings at sometime so that creates more problems with skimming. Finally it possibly needs a rebore as there's corrosion in two cylinders due to the engine standing for many years in a damp atmosphere. When I add the cost of ll that I have to decide whether it's worth all the expense as the engine was a spare I bought many years ago.

Have you spoken to Norris Motorsport in Alfreton?

No I have n't spoken to Norris. Long studding is a job for an engineering company, whether they have those facilities I don't know as their Website has no information what so ever.

I did n't want to spend a fortune on the block, I just want it right before I put it up for sale.

It might be worth speaking to him - he's very knowledgeable and is an ex-Ford engine design engineer. You can't put everything on the web - what ever happened to using the telephone!
