Atlas Axle - leaking oil through wheel bearings

    Cheers mates.

Well, here's the deal. My atlas axle is leaking through the bearings (not around them). I know the oil bearings wich had an oil seal incorporated are no longer available (I only realised this recently) so... what do you guys do to fix this? One thing I know for sure, smearing sealant in the bearing housing and the back plate won't for sure cure this (I haven't tried it yet because it simply doesn't make sense...) because it's leaking through the bearing and not around it. There must be a way otherwise people would run away from these axles and what happens is the exact opposite.

I want to thank you ahead for any help. It would be very welcomed!

The car is getting close to the finish... it's just these little issues...

    Cheers,

    Mário Santos.

I had this recently on my atlas axle running two piece shafts when the wheel bearings got old/worn. I changed the bearings for new ones of the same brand and it has fixed the problem....for now.

I use these ones. They aren't the best quality but last well for the price. They are normally £22.50 where i get them from.

    Hi freddy,

those are the exact ones I bought but they started leaking even before the car started to move... on both sides.

I found these which seem to be the old/good type. Just waiting to get an answer from the guy stating they're the size I need and hopefully I'll be sorted.

    Fingers crossed.

    I'll keep you posted.

Sounds like you’ve used an open bearing, of course it will leak, you can buy a bearing with one side sealed or a completely sealed bearing with its own lubricant. Apparently some of the bearings you get are designed to be greased and only have a grease seal which will obviously leak oil. You need the correct bearing with oil seal. Any SKF dealer will be able to supply them from dimensions if you can’t source them

No idea I don’t buy them from a bearing company, I just know from experience that SKF will supply any bearing you like from dimensions/spec. It’s how I order them at work

Re: Atlas Axle - leaking oil through wheel bearings

I dont now if leaks from outside or through the bearing, I know my mechanic put some glue because I see it in half-shaft and the leak is there again. all summer without my car and I dont know how to solve the problem. My mechanic uses heat to put the retainer and I see some videos and read about it and we should use special tool to put the bearings and retainer not heat correct. so can this be the cause of leak? I will buy the tools and order new bearings, then I will do the job by myself.

It’s usually from the outside of the bearing. Mostly because the axle is worn, usually some RTv silicone sealer does the trick

Bearing with differents seals need to be put in correct way, lips into the axle.
I had to remove mine as I didn't put them correctly.
Also you can put sealant for bearing for the outside, I did that also as one side was a little worn as Erikmex said.

My mechanic put some sealent but continues to leak. Must be through the bearing. maybe its worn. I will put new bearings and seal the half shaft.

the correct bearing has a different seal on each side, diff side has squares molded in to it to show you what side faces the diff, many of the aftermarket ones for sale are not correct, I have bought some from *bay that were not correct
