    Engine won't shut down!

    Hi everyone.

My newly built race pinto engine won't shut down after turning the ignition off and pulling the battery kill switch. The gauges, lights and fuel pumps do turn off but the engine keeps running although you can sense it getting starved. It's as if the alternator keeps fuelling the ignition. I have to pull the ignition coil cable to shut it down when it happens. It only happens now and then.

The electric instalation was built from scratch.

Could it be a relay or something? Any hints?

    Cheers and thanks,

    Mário Santos.

sounds like your kill switch is wired wrong and the altenator is still powering your ignition side

Or its pre-ignition causing 'running-on' Higher compression causes higher cylinder temps and when combined with reduce octane fuel, the plug tips act like diesel glow plugs and carry on ignition whether its electrically on or off. Had a Kart engine do it once on a stand - only managed to stop the damn thing by pulling the carb off! My Metro Turbo used to do it after a serious thrash! Use better fuel and it'll likely never happen again.

Katana, I'm more inclined to consider alancdavis hint more probable than your for one simple reason. If it was the high temperatures caused by pre-ignition and consequently over-heating the plugs it wouldn't shut down imediatly after pulling the ignition coil cable off. Don't you think?

Also, we didn't find any signs of pre-ignition by eye or ear.

    Cheers,

What about the fact that it only hapens now and then and not everyone time I try to shut it down? Being a wire problem shouldn't I happen always?
