Yb cosworth rebuild advice
Hello all,
I'm currently in the process of stripping my 2wd cosworth engine in my mk2 escort due to a slight coolant leak into cylinder 2. I suspect maybe head gasket. Could this be caused by anything else?
Also, while it is apart, I remember a slight rattle at idle. Not sure where from but while it is apart, what is recommended in doing to the head? Is there anything in the block that can or should be done.
Is there any way of diagnosing faults with the block while the head is off? This will be my first engine rebuild but I would like to have a go my self.
Thanks

If you are on a 205 block worst case is a cracked block usually across the exhaust head bolt holes on cylinders 2 and 3, other than that might just be head gasket gone, my group a lasted 11 years before it rotted, as for the rattle if you are using the older type pistons you can get a rattle from piston slap when cold, depending on the miles the engine has done you could check valve guides are ok, change the stem seals and make sure the head is flat, but only skim the bare minimum you can and keep head thickness above 138.68, what spec is the engine and how many miles has it done?
If you are going to rebuild the whole motor get yourself a manual which you can find on the net.
