Front near side clicking sound from wheel!

I have this ticking/clicking sound that seems to come from my near side front wheel (Mk2 Escort standard strut) that varies with speed and changes with cornering. It goes away when accelerating, even slightly, and is most noticeable when my foot is off the throttle. When off the ground the wheel is completely quiet when spun in both directions! Just to be sure I replaced the wheel bearing but the sound was exactly the same as before. The pads have plenty of wear left and the discs look fine.
The sound seems to be exactly like I would imagine something catching the grooves in the discs (drilled and grooved non ventilated) would sound like, but as I said it is dead quiet when off the ground.

I hope someone can shed some light on this as I have searched on the net but have yet to find an answer. I've also searched my car thoroughly but cannot find the problem.
