it will be out in the Dunlop track and race car championship, the championship caters for every thing from fiesta's and X/flow powered mk1 escorts AKA Andy Pipe to fire breathing monsters, like Rod Birleys 541bhp WRC Escort and John Cross's V8 Eurocar engined Focus

dont look too close at the paintwork diabolical would be too kind a word for but but its ok from a distance.

yes i ran without pas last year, car was non power in the first place, so a power rack is a bit quicker, but without the hydralics isn't heavy.
in my opinion and experience you dont really need a quick rack on a tarmac race car as long as you can get it to turn in properly, on slicks on tarmac is if you cant recover a slide with half turn of lock or less you not going to ,quick rack or not!

thats not to say they dont have there place they do particulary on the loose, i guess it also has to be born in mind most beemers arn't as tail happy as escorts

its staying black, bring on mr inskip and let him try to get close enough to try those tricks again

that said theres a chap on another certain forum who has posted in black and white how he's going to blow me away on the straights in a fiesta!
ok its turbo'd but he thinks 250bhp is fast but he really believes hes gonna out drag me!

bring emm on i say, last year i set out to prove a concept, this year i mean business, which probably means i'm gonna spend half the season in a gravel trap or the percy: percy: percy:

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

    rolling road update,

to recap, last time we ran it the engine went danerously lean at high revs so we had to abort, so we rebooked the rollers and ordered some bigger injectors

went back to the rollers today but unfortunatly the injectors are somewhere over the Atlantic at the moment, so we had to be content with trying to back the boost off enough to get the mixture safe enough to race on, it sort of worked, the lowest we could get is 8psi and its still going lean at just over 6000 but its safe enough to race on if i keep the revs down

knocking the boost back has dropped peak torque to 350lbft, but as i can rev it on further than before peak power is 425bhp, which should be more than enough for this coming weekends shake down, and even then wway to much if the rain thats forecast happens

BARC se are running on the stowe circuit saturday, its only small but theres very little to hit so its a good place to try out whats most likely going to be a spinning top for the first time, and for me its only half the distance of lydden

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

the stowe test really didn't go to plan, i developed a big end knock! and it seized once i turned it off.

i removed and stripped the engine sunday to find no 1 con rod scrap and the bearing welded to the crank, not to mention the crank 3 thou bent, a load of swarf embedding in the piston skirt a damaged gudgen pin and chipped ring.

to cut a long story short when i modified the oil ways on this block ( something i've done many times before on these engines) i made a small mistake and effectivly shut the oil supply to no 1 main bearing off.

time was really against me as i also had a test session booked at brands on friday, fortunatly i had a spare crank and rod, and set to ordering bits left right and center from Euro parts, BMW and Burtons (pistons are V6 ford)

at the same time my normal day job got really busy and i was working 10 hour days, then working to the small hours each morning rebuilding the engine, thursday night it was ready and i was shattered, i'm getting too old to live on only 4 hours sleep a night, let alone 4 nights running.

i made it to brands, where i had issues with missfires which i gradually ironed out, thankfully the engine seemed as powerfull as ever and the chassis was really good.

my best previous lap times round brands indy was a 55 in my 208bhp non turbo car driving it right on the edge without other traffic in the way, unfortunatly friday there was a lot of slower traffic about, and i never got a good unbulked on line lap in all day, but even so was comfortably doing 55's without really pushing, so with a bit more time in the car we might even get into the 50's sometime this year particulary when i have full power, as the bigger injectors are still to be fitted

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

After fitting the 750cc min injectors, we have just finished mapping the engine today, and if i say so myself it does exactly what it said on the tin,

the goal was 100bhp more than last year, with low lag and hopefully reliability so i was looking to keep the boost pressure low, which is why i built a big cc 16valver and fitted an rs500 race intercooler, turbo technics built the t38 turbo to give low lag and getting on for T4 power saying it would run out of steam at around 450bhp

    the final result

    15psi boost, 409lbft 460bhp,

it looks like TT were spot on with the claims for the turbo as cranking the boost up further doesn't actually make more power, suggesting that 460bhp really is its limit in terms of airflow.

one thing that we never actaully did was to play with the cam timing, but then again, i've got more than enough power for now, just need the driver skill to go with it.

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I looked at the pic of your crank, and thought "why do they have such big counterweights"
What would happen if they weren't there? I am guessing it is something to do with balancing, but why doesn't the flywheel do that. And why do you have to have a flywheel at all if those weights are swinging round in there. Surely not just for the clutch. Though I am aware of seriously lightened flywheels used in racing.
And I should have said "sorry if these are dumb questions."

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

the counter weights are more important than the flywheel, that just stores energy the engine doesnt actually need the flywheel at all, mine basically weighs next to nothing, the counterweights on the other hand are there to offset the weight of the crankpins and rod/piston assemblies, a fully counterweighted crank suffers much less from tortional vibrations and whipping

that crank has quite a long stroke so i guess that means bigger weights are needed although strangely this crank which is from a 2.5 with 87mm stroke is 4 kgs lighter than the 84mm stroke 2.3 version

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

the second race wasn't so good, it was the first wet race i've ever done in this car, and the thing steamed up so badly i couldn't see where i was going and so drove like an old granny, still i did finish and all things considered 3rd in class and 12th overal wasn't bad

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

    cheers gary

beemer was going well wasn't it, lots more to come too, i wasn't pushing the chassis or brakes hard, im amazed how well it all coped with the power, it could get very interesting as number crunching shows i've matched Rods car on the power to weight ratio front.

mending that F***** alfa is getting to be something of a habit, its owner pays a fortune to his engine/car builder, who takes for ever, charges a fortune and send back a car more unreliable than the whole 1970's 80's british leyland range of cars put together, it regulary breaks due to bad prep, and the builder charges to put the mistakes in prep right

i cannot understand why the cars owner keeps going back to be ripped off, but as he's a friend i just pick the pieces up at the events where i can.

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

it would seem that the prop coupling is struggling to cope with the power!

for a few laps at lydden i had Bill richards on my bumper in his BDA engined metro, apparenty every gear change i lit the rear end and laid some rubber down even going into 5th!

so i guess its quite good at absorbing the shock loadings on the transmission and probably saving me from breaking other bits of transmission i shall stick to using std ones

    combe update

bit of another disaster actually, 2nd lap of practise oil filter housing gasket let go! which is something that never happens, but it did. anyway i borrowed? some gasket paper and made a new one, starting race 1 at the back of the grid, which was a major handy cap, my only experience of combe is a couple of sprints 6 years ago and a track day 12 years ago before the place even had chicanes in a std renault 18!

anyway even without a clue as to braking points let alone turning points, not getting a practise i haddn't realised just how bumpy combe is, and the dampers were way too soft but even so, i worked my way up from 30th to 15th, towards the end of the race the water temp was getting rather high , so i backed off for the last few laps and just held position.

back in the paddock gave the shocks a couple of clicks, only to realise later on they needed a couple more still, i also spotted a crack in the exhaust manifold, oh dear, fingers were crossed that it would stop at a crack, it didn't, the engine went like a rocket for a few laps, before the crack became a huge split and full boost became a mere 0.2 bar, i tried really hard, and made the beemer very wide, but lack of track time, not enough damping and sod all power ment i finished but down in 19th slot, still at least i finished twice, and was lucky to still have a turbo attached to the engine at all

Unlucky Graham, but I'm sure you will run out of things to break soon and podium finishes are on the cards Sounds like you did your best though and i have to admit my knowledge of castle gloom is a bit on the vague side too now

Does your engine move too much on the mounts do you think, cos it seams to break whatever you bolt to it?
Maybe a better mounting system for the engine over the winter might help?

Hopefully you'll get the beast sorted enough for Brands and we'll see both TS cars in contention for class wins pray:

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

maybe thats the problem, i'm only ever due one podium and i've already had it, first race of the year,

the engine doesn't move around to much, its farly stiffly mounted, in fact engine mounts are HD RS2000.

i think the earlier oil line fractures were down to vibration, its well known that m10's S14's aren't the smoothest things around, especially with the long stroke 2.5 crank and the heavy forged V6 ford pistons, the fact that the same parts didn't break last year on a very similar m10 bottom end is probably down to RPM, i use 1000-1500rpm more than with the m10.

i think the gasket failure was just bad luck, although i've never had one fail before the origonal bmw design is'nt brilliant as it has a long unsupported section of gasket at a point where the gasket itself is quite slender.

over the years i've got used to bits dropping off engines unless very well attached, main battery feed starter cables for one, i used to break no end of the crimped on terminals until i switched to a bolt togther design intended for marine use.

as for the manifold, to be honest it was to be expected at some time, turbo manifolds often crack let alone DIY fabrcated ones, i do need to think about how i might improve it, idealy have one made, but its about 1500 to get it done in the right material niconel i believe is the material to use for its low expansion and ability to withstand enormous heat.

for the moment i shall just weld the manifold back up and hope that its worked out its stresses so its the shape it wants to be and wont crack again

i see, so your blaming the Ford parts then are you, the RS mounts and V6 pistons

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

gotta be the ford bits breaking it, the turbos is mainly ford, coil and leads zetec/cvh, crank trigger fiesta hcs and the intercooler is RS 500 its also got a mk2 esc pedal box in there as well so that will help break it all the more

might as well lay some blame on the ecotec crank pulley and alfa romeo header tank while were at it cos bmw parts dont break

actually with the exception of the pistons its built out of what was laying around, so those ford bits are doing a pretty good job :tumblewee

LOL Graham Funny enough my V6 cosworth engine has absolutely no BMW parts in it whatsoever
Still probably has just as many German parts in it though

Getting back to the topic, do you have any pics of your turbo manifold?

a wise man once said " to win a race , you have to finish a race " so turn the boost down first and uprate everything before turning it back up again .
