Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

just a quicky, only a little progress this morning as i start work soon, i put lifters and cams in, cams caused a bit of head scratching as it was early in the day and i'm using two inlet cams! which means std marks etc dont line up, got there though.

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

      yesterdays progress,

drilled and tapped the timing chain tensioner body to take an adjustable stop, the idea being teh chain is still tensioned hydralically as std, but the tension cannot back off on over run or when the engines left standing.

I am watching your progress, but don't really know what's going on.
I have entered your pic in the "Weld of the week" thread.

hope so, that all depends on the engine holding together on the dyno and me having enough £££ left to actually race

Re: worlds most powerfull bmw 316?

progress as slowed somewhat, the neighbours cars keep breaking down!

spent most of the day faffing with the engines valve clearances, i always set them a bit big when i build the head up on the bench as they always close up when you torque the head down to the block, but this time they had closed up much more than normal so they were all too tight, the only reason i can think is that the ferriday head gasket doesnt compress anything like as much as std ones, so the head bolts compress the head more than usual, anyway after several hours with a load of shims, feeler gauges and a micrometer the clearances are now finally right, well they will be until the thing is dyno'd then will probably want doing again

couldnt be bothered with pics of tappet shims so i toook a pic of one of the front wings instead, they have now had a quick lick of filler. primer and paint and look quite tidy, not perfect, but its a race car it only needs to look tidy, besides i've neither the time, money or patients to do a perfect job.

i really cant be bothered with bodywork, but back in my dim distant past i worked in a body shop for a couple of years, the real problem i have these days is i dont use a paint gun enough and have to re-learn every time i use one and i dont have the patients anymore to do a good prep job, and then its usually using different equipment and paint type each time

not much progress today got to go to work soon,

i bolted the n/s engine mount on after reinforcing it as it cracked several times last year, if i had realised i was in welding competition i would of taken a pic of it before painting it

and refitted the oil lines that feed the piston cooling jets
