Wheel width for mk1 with bubble arches

    Guys,

Will it be wide enough if I use 7 inch wide wheels with 2 inch offset on my escort mk1? The car has wide arches and I am having doubts if the 7 inch wheels will be enough to fill the space of the wheel well.

    Thanks in advance

    Mac

Really depends on the axle you're using as well as the offset of the wheels. I'm using a 52" Atlas and 8" wide ET0 wheels on mine. It will vary depending on what you've got.

I actually quite like these two

8" wheel/tyre combo under the rear arches of the non bubble arched one.

Re: Wheel width for mk1 with bubble arches

So. The questions not been answered. Basically there would be the incorporation of either a 50" or 52" axle on a wide body Mk1 escort.

Can we base this on a 52'' Axle. If all measurements were based on a 52" axle, it would mean that the same wheel dimensions and offset could be used on a 50'' with the use of a 1" wheel spacer.

question 1. Whats the widest wheel that will fit? 7,8,9,10? ( this is for the rear end only)

Question 2. What offset (-) would be required for question 1's answer?

Question 3. i would personally not want to much wheel and rubber under the front. steering geometry has to be accounted for as well as drivability. I would not want to exceed 7" with 205s on the front. So what would be the offset for that ?

No need for photos of cars racing about with lovely wheels as it really doesn't answer anything.

    Thanks guys.

On the front why don't you fit GP4 type alloy front hubs that are 10mm wider per side than std cast hubs, these can be bought to fit your std studs. That way you can use 205 tyres on the front and they should fill the arch.

On the rear if you are on a 48.5 inch english axle you can use a moderate width wheel spacer to fill the arch. The ideal wheel to use is OO offset. Sorry no photos of Mk1's to post!

Hi pushrod king, do you happen to remember what your front suspension setup was on the car before the arches? meaning controll arms, strut top mounts, camber? thank you!

The set up is standard modified/track Escort stuff, concentric top mounts, rose-jointed adjustable track control arms, Twin cam anti roll bar. For the 7" wheel width I used extended track rods to give as wide a track as possible.

nice, allright. Do you happen to remember how much camber you ran there? I think i read somewhere that about 1.5 deg. should be optimal, but i dont remember where and if it was a reliable source

It would of been around 3.5 degrees negative but camber that you need depends on wheel width, tyre type and use of the car.

Im making the car street legal, but will use it for various historic trackday events and hillclimbs (theres lots of those where I live, which are oldtimer friendly).
Running a 1.6gt pinto, double 40s IDF, atlas rear, capri struts front. I've got some capri 4 spokes at the moment. they are 6j and im thinking of using some 175 wide tyres.
so im guessing between 1.5 and 3.5 deg should do the trick then.
