Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY
Loton Park Sat 16th May
For me this was just a round of the Loton Park championship, but the event was a round of the HSA so there was a good entry of 10 cars in the Mod Prod class
The forecast was not very promising but the day started dry
1st Practice - I left DVY on last years slicks with the better ones on the back and found there was plenty of grip so had a good run up the hill in 63.21s with DVY feeling a lot more stable than on the Practice Day in March
2nd Practice - There was a brief shower before this run which left the hill damp and greasy with no grip at all so I had a sensible run for 69.36s
1st Timed Run - As the sun was shining now, it was time to fit the new slicks and see if I could break the 60s barrier for the first time. I made a good start (2.35s) and hung on round to the split at Triangle in 23.31s (quicker than Fly's best of 23.40s), drifted a bit out of Triangle and through the left hander at Keepers but got my foot down early and kept her flat up Cedar straight and over the crest, got round Fallow nicely and up to the final corner at Museum, and a final blast over the finish
This year there's a clock just over the finish so there was much cheering when I saw the time of 59.82s
2nd Timed Run - My first run was only good enough for 2nd in class behind a Lotus Elise (59.26s) but enough ahead of Steve's Mk1 (60.56s), so I went for it again, got a good start (2.33s) and was even quicker to Triangle (23.24s), kept her nice and tidy round the next 2 bends and up the straight, but possibly braked slightly early into Fallow and crossed the line in 59.95s, slightly disappointed but at least it showed the previous run wasn't a fluke
The Lotus and Steve both went a little slower as well, so I was still 2nd in Class
Also out was Stuart Stelling in his lovely Beige Mk2 RS2000, running consistent 63s runs on Dunlop X22's. After seeing me fit some new Avon Slicks and go a lot quicker, he was curious to see how much difference they made, so he fitted my old slicks for the final run and was happy with how the car felt except for a slight bit of understeer and did a 64s
The 2 stunning pics below were taken by Craig Cooper who always comes along to help out Stuart - the pics are taken at Museum, a hairpin left just over a crest and are very interesting as it doesn't feel like DVY's at that angle inside the car
The couple of pics I have of Fly round this corner just show a lot of drifting but maybe they're taken a bit further on
So after a very good day, it was time to load up and head off to Dave's for the night before the Mid Speed round on Sunday
