Who has the oldest Mk1 Escort?

My Mk1 Escort GT was 1st registered 1/6/68. There can't be many "F" reg'd Escorts still about. Are there any registered in '67? Do you have an older one than mine?
I am talking about Mk1 Escorts and not the 100e variant!

I was at Roy Nunn's place the other day and he showed me all the differences the very early Escorts had. It's amazing once they are pointed out to you. Does anybody know when the later cars came out, I believe it was late '68?

Clint has a Comp Strut car... with the solid firewall etc.. dont know what date it was built though.

Seen a few with 3 hole firewalls before the 5 hole ones started

16th Feb '68 here!! 1100 Deluxe. Thats pretty early-i remember seeing a pic in CF of an E reg car. Heres mine:

I had one of the first 100 mk1 RS2000's. It was a genuine converted Mex shell, and the chassis number was 000073

My olds mk1 OHJ922F was a july 68 registerd car, dunno when it was built though

The cars changed in 1969 I think Smiffys G reg cart has the same layout as my car, My car is July '68.

Let's list the differences:

1. Bonnet release in front grille
2. Protruding fuel neck (and cap)
3. Foot-operated windscreen washer
4. Washer bottle different and mounted on the other side of the bulkhead on the top.
5. Heater bubble sides extend to points rather than the sides being chopped off
6. Door handles have locks in the button.
7. Windscreen washer jet is in middle of bonnet
8. Rear valance/panel is different, no reversing lights (i think) but the shape to the lower part is different, a lot smoother.
9. Head lining has little stars in the pattern, think the later ones were just perforated lining.
10. compression struts instead of arb.


Thats the ones i can think of off the top of my head!!

Differences on the shell I have noticed:
Different Quarter panels - petrol cap and door slam plates/shuts.
Different Doors (all mechanisms and door lock is in the handle, handle is different)
Different Firewalls
Different Chassis Rails to take the comp struts but they also look different.
Different Front Panel

All the early shells are more resistant to rust as they were red oxided.

I don't know of many. My Mk1 was built in 1969.

4.Different head lining,(same as the Anglia)
5 Diffrerent outer door handles( key in button)
6 Different interior door handles (same as Anglia)
7 Different dash air vents
8 Different exhaust hangers
9 Door tops inside car different due to no lock release button,lock and unlock from inside by use of the door opening handle, same as the anglia
10 Comression strut front suspention
11 Windscreen washer bottle is different
12 The front panel has a hole for a starting handle but it wasnt changed until later (about 73 i think)
13 All had rectangle shaped headlamps until about 69 i think

i think i remember hearing about the old deluxe models had lieka polka dot seat pattern. i dunno if this is true or not tho.

A few more differences pointed out at Roy's were an extra drain hole in the floor behind the front seats, latch points on the B pillar, door hinges as well as an obvious bonnet hinge mount area going further up toward the scuttle panel.
I haven't looked yet but are the bottom arms different on compression strut cars?
Can I fit an anti roll bar aswell?
Did the early Twin cams keep both?
Any early GT's about?
The Twin Cam was based on these cars and all in white to begin with I am told.

Excellent bit of old mk1 shell trainspotting fella's . All mk1 escorts have a foot mounted screen washer pedal so scrubb that one off the list . Add fat interior switches to the list though .

the earlier models had diffrent speedo's. on the later models the numbers on speedo are all horizontal but the earlier 1's they were like this

I didn't know that, just made the transition from Mk2 into Mk1

I haven't seen comp strut Mk1 for ages now but I do know of a mint one in existence nearby. These comp strut Mk1s must all be 2-door right? As the 4-doors were only built starting October(?) 1969.

If you look at the heater bulge on an early shell the ends up near the scuttle panel are pointed. On the later shells they have the ends folded over.

Bonnets are different where the catch fits.

I think mine is late 67 model. Pointed heaterbubble, protruding fuel filler, bonnet mounted washer nozzle, key in door button. But I have 2 hole firewall.

Hi to everyone .... I have a mk1 escort with a difference. its the van 6cwt and build date is 1 march 1968 on F reg dose anyone know of an older one? .as on how many left data base it seams as if I have the only mk1 escort van from 1968 and keep getting told they never made one this early .this cant be so as I am the second owner and I have ownd it for 22 years and knew the previous owner and how much he paid for it. log book and data base info.back this up thanks for any input

Mine was registered in August '68, it has compression struts, washer bottle mounted on the offside, pointed heater bubble, smaller bonnet hinges etc and a solid firewall. Just a shame the red oxide must have gone on thin on my car!

mine is later october 68 (estate), its got a strange deflector plate on the front panel which tucks under the bumper and goes to the vents on the front panel, think ive seen one once before

got a two door super saloon from april 68 think I read somewhere once that production started in late 67 but weren't sold until 68 so possibly cars that were registered to go back on road could state made in 67 has most of above mentioned differences centre dash part clips in rather than screwed in place

Hi I have a mk1 1300 deluxe 2dr first registered 01.01.1968 it has protruding fuel tank comp struts 12inch drum brakes and pedal screenwash with cheeseblock washer bottle and bonet release in front grill and I am currently using the car in and around Scotland it has an English axle , I believe it was exported and then brought back to Scotland
