    Mk2 escort rear suspension options

Currently building a mk2 escort to enter the CTCRC pre 83 touring cars. But I am struggling on what rear suspension to run I have fully adjustable coilovers on the front and on the back I have gaz shocks but looking at them they have gone very rusty so looking to replace. The rear is NOT turreted. Any advice or recommendations will be appreciated,
coilovers or shocks I'm not looking to break the bank I have a fairly tight budget

    thanks

what does the rule book say you can do, no point in suggesting 5 or 6 links, coil overs etc, if your only allowed leaf springs and tramp bars

Re: Mk2 escort rear suspension options

    good point

    the rules main points
    general
1 suspension type must remain as manufactured
    mounting points
2 original mounting points to be used
    springs
3 spring type as fitted by the manufacturer, shall be employed
4 spring rate and thickness is free
5 Leaf springs are free it is permitted to upgrade to single or multi
    shock absorbers
6 a Macpherson strut may be converted to coil over damper ( does this mean i can run coil overs)
7 anti-roll bars, anti tramp bars, panhard rods, watts linkage, lowering blocks and there mountings may be added, and these components may incorporate spherical bearings and joints

Not sure if this means i cant run coil overs ?

    thanks

Basically stock systems or normal 'boy racer road' stuff then! Single leafs + tramp bars as available on RS models and some decent shocks. As you haven't got M. struts on the back - so you can't convert to coil overs! Add a Panhard or a Watts linkage and will be about as good as it gets - roll bar can add some stiffness.

Re: Mk2 escort rear suspension options

i made a slight mistake mixed pages from the reg,s the regs and was reading from the pre 66 regs.

    my championship states

1 suspension type must remain as manufactured mounting points
    2 springs are free
3 the original operating principle as fitted by the manufacturer. (coil, leaf, torsion)
    4 spring caps are free
5 spring platforms may be adjustable
6 a telescopic damper may be converted to a coil over damper and the spring removed
7 anti-roll bars, anti tramp bars, panhard rods, watts linkage, lowering blocks and there mountings may be added, and these components may incorporate spherical bearings and joints

sorry to waste your time now with this in mind what would my best set up be.

i assume coil overs will be the best option but i have been looking for rear coilovers but cant seem to find them unless turreted.

    cheers

Re: Mk2 escort rear suspension options

You can use front coilovers but must retain rear leafs and shocks, you wont find them, to fit coilovers on the rear you need to turret and 5 link.

Re: Mk2 escort rear suspension options

you can 4 link the rear using the leaf spring mounts and anti tramp bar brackets. the above rules state you can convert the telescopic damper to coilover so ifits a mk2 you can run the coilovers in the original damper position under the car. add a panhard rod or watts and away you go.

Re: Mk2 escort rear suspension options

How is that axle arrangement compliant? 4 links aren't Tramp bars and the mounting point for the coil overs is different / changed from manufacturer provided originally? Also it is using the 'old' style mismatched links so possibly a mk1 car which would have lay down shocks?

Very good budget straight line set up, this wouldn't work within the regs our man is looking at, let alone work on circuits.
