C20xe - Head gasket blown
The head gasket appears to have gone in my c20xe powered corsa
I've had a look for a new head gasket (Cometic) and came across various thicknesses. (0.040" to 0.120")
As far as I know the engine is all standard. If I didn't skim the head I'd assume 0.040" would be the way to go? and if I did get it skimmed then I'd go thicker by the amount removed? Am I on the right lines?
Is there anything else I should be changing / doing while the head is off? (Timing belt a given)
At some point the plan is to put the engine into the escort and go for 200bhp if that makes any odds to what I am going to do just now
Cheers

Re: C20xe - Head gasket blown
if the engine is standard i would simply use another std gasket, or a std thickness one,
whatever you do get the head skimmed though, you dont want to be doing the job again a week later

Cheers Graham
Yeah the head will be getting skimmed regardless just to be sure.
Ill order a new head gasket, head bolts, timing belt and probably water pump
Maybe a Haynes manual for it!

Standard head gasket thickness is 0.051" or 1.3mm if its useful to you.

You also need to investigate to what caused the head gasket to go in the first place.Don't forget to coat your Cometic MLS head gasket with something like Welseal otherwise you could have water leaking down the side of the block.
