if you already have the carbs the only real issue i can see is finding a suitable inlet manifold,
although IDFs being rarer than sidedrafts you could probably sell them for enough to buy a set of sidedrafts and an inlet manifold filters etc to fit the xe
bogg bros will do a manifold so that shouldnt be a problem, im thinking the 44's may flow better as they will be up in the clear air rather than tucked down the side of the engine like side drafts
no they wont flow more air than the sidedrafts as they are obviously 44mm not 45 or bigger like the sidedrafts, although otherwise very similar but also having a 90 degree turn in an inlet manifold doesnt exactly help airflow, i cant see it making much difference where in the engine bay the carbs are, you might even find you loose power with them higher up because they are drawing more hot air heat from the engine rising rather than cooler air from through the grill.
as i said i dont suppose it will make much difference either way, but i very much doubt you will get more power from you downdrafts
