Escort Cosworth Bubbeling coolant
Hello,
When I shut of my engine after a ride of +5km (so the engine is at his normal temperature), there is a lot of pressure on the coolant reservoir. When I open it sloooowly, the coolant will stay in but it's bubbling for quit a long time...
Someone told me it's because the coolant passes the turbo. When the engine is off, there is no more circulation so the coolant will boil at the turbo...
I should remove the turbo out of the coolant circuit. The turbo will cool enough with the engine oil.
As he said, a lot of race sierra's and escorts drive like this...
Can anyone confirm this please? Or is there anyone with the same problems?

when you shut an engine down, initially the coolant temp will RISE due to a lack of circulation.
so unless you are loosing coolant or actually having overheating issues, leave it alone and defiantly dont open the pressure cap with the engine hot

It's normal, and yes, the water cooling of the turbo will cause some localised boiling when the water stops circulating. It's normal, I wouldn't change it if I were you.

Only I'm affraid the header tank will burst because of the water pressure, as you can see it's allready swollen

Simple physics - water under pressure boils at more than 100 deg.C - releasing the pressure and water will instantly boil. Subject to turbo type it can be run without water cooling - if plain bearing type, then idling for 30 seconds or so after a drive allows the oil to remove most of the heat so it doesn't bake BUT if a BB type turbo its risky relying on oil cooling only as the balls are held in plastic cages so can't handle the heat soak on a shut down - even if not being pumped the water will thermo syphon taking heat away.

lots of cars have plastic header thanks which swell a bit when the coolant is hot.
the ford tanks were not the best of things new so perhaps you could buy an alloy tank?

It amazes me how many drivers with Turbo engines switch off their engines when stinking hot after a hard drive without letting the engine temps settle down due to heat soak. I would recommend at least 60 to 90 seconds idling as an absolute minimum before turning off the engine.
We ran a Gp A Escort Cosworth with anti lag and the water cooled bearing on the Turbo was never connected due to too much heat for the cooling system to cope with.

Unless its a possible head gasket issue and youre over pressurising the coolant system to a pressure just below the relief pressure of the cap, it doesn't sound like a head gasket failure though.....from what you describe, with the exception of the coolant tank issue,. ive seen an alloy header tank on a cossie go from rectangualr to oval through a blown head gasket and the pressure cap didn't lift.

I don't think I have a blown head gasket. In my opinion, when I have a bad head gasket I should also have pressure after 5mn idle on a cold engine. witch I do not have now. water consumption = minimal to 0
Forest_rallying: Even when the engine idle for 10-15min, still there is pressure & bubbling in the circuit... I tried this allready to see it makes any different..

mine is doing same ... think every cossie is doing it...its caused by turbo as you said...there is too much heat from turbo....you cant make it colder!...you can idle 2 hours ...still have big temp on out water pipe from turbo....its strange and I think its one of fault from Ford engineering when cossie was build...they want to build it fast..no time for deep research.
