    Type 9 question

Is was doing one of many of the jobs on the Mk1, off topping up the oil in the gearbox. As fast as I but it in it was peeing out.
Anyway I have been offered a 5 speed out of a 2.8 capri ( type 9 ). He swears it will fit mine, and be close ratio to boot.
I'm not a total numpty I think I know a bit, but its the first I heard of this ??? is it true, as he only wants a few quid
Have all your dumps at work!!!Not only will you save money on toilet paper, but you'll also be getting paid for it.

    Re: Type 9 question

it's true enough, but you need to chop a bit off the input shaft

    Re: Type 9 question

yep its what ive got in mine, but the input shaft is an inch too long... can be done with an angle grinder if your happy doing that.. or for a few extra quid when you have it rebuilt

i really like mine, the gap from 1st to 2nd isnt as big as a regular t9 which is nice, and 2nd3rd4th is nice and close.. although i have to say if your used to a 4speed it will feel very clunky on the changes and dont bother with a quick shift kit get a single piece rose jointed jobby, could barely change gear when it was cold with the quick shift kit

    Re: Type 9 question

I found that the input shaft was quite different. I had to shorten the nose, chop back the splines and also reduce the diameter of the nose.
I also had to cut about 5mm from the end of the casting that supports the input shaft as it was fouling on the clutch pressure plate This was on a crossflow BTW.

After all that fiddling (and having to offer up the box about 7 times!) it is a nice gearbox to use, the shift is not quite as slick as the 'Standard' MK1 gearbox but with a quickshift kit it's not far off. As Steely Dan says the ratios are nice as well.

you also have to be carefull its not a "visualy similar" 2.3 or even diesel box. count the 1st gear i/p to o/p ratio.

    Re: Type 9 question

the 2.8 is the only one with a closer 1st. i cant remember the numbers off hand but you need to count teeth on the 1st gear or turn i/p for 1 full rev of o/p.

    1st on a 2.8 box is 3.36 as opposed to 3.65 on a regular t9... i think
