    Alternators for the YB

Would a 55amp lightweight alternator be ok replacing the 70amp OE version if the car is not running, heated rear screen, stereo, heater, etc.

I have seen smaller Denso alternators, but most are 55amp? can the ford wiring be adjusted to fit the Denso alternator and would the 55amp need a less powerful battery?

Seeing as its in a Mk1 Escort the battery will just be cranking engine and running ECU, lights and dashboard.
So amps dont have to be as high???

55 amps is plenty if you're not running heavy draw stuff like heated windscreens etc.

Alternators are simple beasts, they normally only require a connection to the battery and another to the dash warning light. (The earth runs through the main engine earth cable)

Don't forget the battery is only really there to start the car, the alternator should power all the electrics when the engine is running

If I remember correctly I had the smaller 55amp alternator on mine and it was just barely producing enough power to start the car so swapped it for the correct 70amp one, only cost £30 for a Bosche one with a 12 month warranty.

I think the 4x4 version is needed then, its 90 AMP.
I can deal with the extra weight over less juice.
and running extra electrics for the engine might need the reliability.
