    Passat TDI running problem

My brothers car has developed a strange running problem. The car stutters when the turbo is cutting in when at full throttle. Once the turbo kicks in it pulls perfectly. If the gar is driven gently there is no symptom. Another thing is it does not happen when the car is cold. I have not read any codes or anything yet. Will probably do it at the weekend

    Any help is welcome

    Regards
    Tom

they also have can have issues with the throttle butterfly snapping shut when it shouldnt, symtoms of that are a very sudden almost violent momentary loss of power, as the throttle butterfly is only there for emission purposes its easy to rule that out by using a cable tie round part of its linkage to keep it open and try driving it

It is a 2001 car. The symptoms sound very like you have described Graham where the car suddenly looses power and this happens a few times then it takes off again when the turbo kicks in. I will tell him about throttle butterfly and see if that solves it. What causes the butterfly to snap shut?

Mine did the same, it was the air flow meter. I have a spare one if you get stuck.
If you cant fix it with a hammer, use a bigger one!!

butteryfly is vac operated via a solenoid, so it could be the solenoid or a wiring fault, i used to see this quite often, my mates passat also develped the same prob when only a few months old, i did a temp fix with the cable tie, 6 years and 60K later the cable tie is still there!!!

audi a4 has a problem with bottom turbo hose when hot. it splits and allows boost to leak or air to be drawn in(, i didnt get that involved) anyway, it gets blocked by thick oil deposits which block the split when cold. on brothers car it would loose boost untill parked up for 5 min then restart ok for a bit.
