    Gaz mk2 RS Insert Fitting???!!

Having trouble fitting my Gaz inserts into my RS legs, taken the old dampers out no problem but the insert doesn't fit down the leg and even if it did fit, how would it be secured in place?? They came with a large threaded retaining nut but there is no thread within the damper leg to screw into??
Code on the insert is GAI 4103 which does seem to be the right one.
    Help please!!!

not sure if it makes a difference, but the retaining nut on the bottom of the legs is 7/16's.

They aren't RS legs - they sound like they are Bilstein for Group 4 Escort. Proper RS legs (which are the same as 1.6 - 2 litre Capri legs) have threads in the top of the leg tube. If they are Bilstein legs they will have bushes inside - this is what i guess the new damper is hitting as you try to put it in!

Thats Bilstein front struts you have & they look like they are Capri 2.8i type & your GAZ inserts wont fit them as the Bilstein has an upside down type insert.

Your only option at the moment is to get a pair of RS or Capri type strut casings to suit the GAZ inserts or to get NEW Bilstein 2.8i Capri inserts or with a bit of modification, fir tarmac Bilstein inserts or forest ones, depending on what you plan to use the car for.

It'll be something that has been needed for a while but GAZ are aware of the interest they are getting & will get onto them soon. I'm told all the parts have been machined & they just need to be tested.

If I've any news I'll let you know !!

    Cheers,

Don't worry....I was onto GAZ last week seeing if there is any progress & as soon as these are available I'll let you know !!

With regards to the poly bushes for the lower bushes on your rear shocks....I've bad news....they cant supply poly bushes to replace the rubber ones but if it was specified at time of ordering then they could have fitted different bottom etes to accept poly bushes....you live n learn !!

    Cheers,
    David

it wouldnt be much of an engineering task to machine up a spacer to allow you to use those struts and inserts together

Is there a thread on the inside of the tube at the top of the strut for your cap to screw into to hold the insert in place ?

Do you have pics of the caps supplied with the GAZ inserts ?

    Thanks,

Re: Gaz mk2 RS Insert Fitting???!!

You do find that some struts come with a spacer already in the bottom - i've certainly had some with spacers in there. As Graham says - making one won't be too much trouble. Just make sure you look at the shape inside the strut casing right at the very bottom as these do tend to be slightly narrower than the rest of the inside of the strut - you don't want your spacer getting jammed before it's properly in the bottom!

I'll see if i can find a spacer in my stuff so you can see what they look like!

are they RS struts or not then?? what should the measurement be from the centre of the stub axle to the spring cup? if it's the same then can I just thread the inside of the tube a bit further down to allow me to tighten onto the insert?
    pic of spacer coming up.....

Still stuck with this one!! the distance between the spring cup and the stub axle is about an inch larger than on the Bilstein legs, which one should I have?? how can I identify an RS leg that my inserts will work properly with?!!
    thanks.

those are RS/ Capri struts. Look in the bottom of the strut there should be a dished spacer in there to match the bottom of the Gaz insert. Looks as though your's is gone. My insert sat a little proud which mean't the top nut didn't fully tighten in the stut body. Call Gaz and describe the problem, they'll send you the shims to go inside the top nut and some washers to chuck in the bottom of the strut to raise it up. They should include these as standard as without them they simply don't fit.

I'm not sure if they are Capri/RS ones or not, if you look on the other thread "What are these struts" I've put photos of the 3 different types I ended up with, the shorter ones fit the GAZ inserts perfectly. I'm far from an expert and more than happy to be proved wrong!!!
