zetec mk1 on bike carbs (Eventually)

Right then.. Ive been threatening to post a thread and start for a while so here It Is...

The Escort Is based on an export spec Aussie shell and the rough spec will be..

    Silvertop zetec from a mondeo
    Type 9 box/quickshift
usher motosport ally Inlet for a 32/36 twin choke weber
    megajolt Ignition (TPS)
billies up front (and at the back probably)
RS 3.54 diff In an anglia axle to get the deep dish minilites under the rears
I have an ashley exh manifold but may ditch that as Ive heard theyre not so good..
cage and whatever seats suit the wallet and my wide arse
Havent firmly decided on colour yet as that will be a while I expect..
I have a converted 1.8cvh sump on the engine and retroford rail, alternator 1.8 waterpump Ign leads etc etc
I only need coolant pipes (I have an ally big header rad) and a prop and Im complete (At least for mock up before paint)...

I dont (as yet) do track days etc the car will be used as a weekend toy to plod around sideways In so didnt want to go daft Just nice and reliable (hopefully)

I havent got many before shots but we all know what they look like heres a few...

Re: zetec mk1 on a twin choke weber (Eventually)

I have made a small start...I was going to Just change the headlight panels to the round type and leave the rest of the front panel In place but as you can see In the previous pics the chassis/Inner wing area needed some attention before being put on the spit this was due to battery leaking I think?

So off with the front panels to see what the crack Is..

Its good apart from the front chassis p/s chassis area shame Its an awkward one...

Once the front was peeled away I was relieved I decided to cut it off..

Once the rad x member Is off It looks nasty at the front..

So out with the rad support panel next..

Cut the bottom of the Inner wing away..

So now the dog can see the rabbit I just have to rebuild the front of the chassis leg lol...

Please feel free to push me along a bit of budge never hurt anyone I'll post some parts pics over the next few days

    Cheers

Re: zetec mk1 on a twin choke weber (Eventually)

Yes It Is an usher Inlet and Its going to need some porting Im afraid
I wouldnt buy anything off usher again after the dicking about I had with delivery times etc but I think Ive got off lightly compared to most
a little work with the die grinder and the ports will be ok Ive heard of some that people that have had to have manifolds from them machined as their flange plates were like bannana's!!
If Im not happy with the outcome I think I'll go bike carbs I'll have to change my title then lol

Cheers mate I had a few mk1's and 2's yrs ago but this Is the 1st one Ive had a crack at doing properly I'm pleased at how Its coming along I'm going to be fitting an Inner sill on the pasenger side,a bigger gearbox tunnel/ passenger front floorpan and may change the whole drivers side front next they arent really bad they could be patched ok but I have full replacements so I think maybe a neater fix?

Still I'll be getting It on the spit 1st I dont think my knee's can take much more concrete at the moment lol

    Thanks for your comments

Cheers mate..I think the chassis rail was caused by leaking battery as the tray and support panel were still quite solid apart from where the leaking occured the other side had shiney bolts coming from the roll bar mount

Even If you do come across a little unexpected take a few pics and make some templates before you chop... Good Luck!!!

Re: zetec mk1 on a twin choke weber (Eventually)

Not done as much as I would have liked over the hols

After recovering from the lurgy I set about sorting the anglia axle, panhard rod and tramp bars

The panhard rod Is an adjustable type that needs the boot floor chopped out (I think) as It Is unlikely I will be adjusting It every 5 mins I thought I would alter It
    and convert to fixed type

    IMAG0489.jpg

I basically slotted It peeled It like a bannana and trimmed It until It fitted the floor/chassis from beneath..

    IMAG0492.jpg

Added a little strengthener bracket to the inner tube..

    IMAG0493.jpg

And tacked It onto the car..The anglia axle Is now fitted (spring saddles just tacked on for mocking up)

At this point I discovered that my tramp bar kit from gs escorts contained 2 bars the same so couldnt fit them

    IMAG0494.jpg

I have sent 1 tramp bar back and Greame Is replacing It

I think the wheels will sit nice with planned disc conversion and maybe some hubcentric spacers depending on where the wheel sits when the discs are on...

    IMAG0479.jpg

    IMAG0480.jpg

    IMAG0481.jpg

Anyway as I couldnt finish mocking the back end up I had a play with the air saw and chisel

And here's the fruits of my labour...

    IMAG0496.jpg

Back panel needs a bit of fettling but I cant weld It on at the mo Ive discovered Im out of welding gas

    IMAG0497.jpg

So I need to find a gas supplier localish hopefully and get the tramp bars/rear panel on I can remove axle to fully weld It up then..

Re: zetec mk1 on a twin choke weber (Eventually)

Right then after recovering from my second lot of lurgy(keeps going around the house )
Ive got a little bit more done today lets hope I can keep the Illness's away to keep going....

Ive had the tramp bar changed now Greame from GS Escorts swapped It quickly so happy days time to get them on...

So drivers side area cleaned up and drilled ready...

    IMAG0501.jpg

    IMAG0502.jpg

    And a spot of weld...

    IMAG0504.jpg

    IMAG0505.jpg

And the bar fitted with axle bracket tacked..

    IMAG0506.jpg

The other side looks much the same forgot to take photo's lol

Removed axle then run welded the panhard/saddle and tramp brackets cleaned and zinga'd ready to re fit tomorow now...

    IMAG0509.jpg

    IMAG0510.jpg

And zinga'd the chassis brackets aswell..

    IMAG0507.jpg

    IMAG0508.jpg

Note to self must not wander off line whilst welding lol

So I'll refit that lot tommorow and get on with the rear panel etc

Re: zetec mk1 on a twin choke weber (Eventually)

Ok back together now so I will be carrying on with some welding (back panel etc) Whilst sorting out rear brakes and some bits and pieces ready for dry build..

I have not fully welded the panhard tower on yet (Theres enough on there for dry build)Its bloody awkward welding that so I'll do that when Its on Its side

A few pics of the axle back on with tramp bars and panhard rod...

Looking to go discs on the back save messing around too much as panhard rod In the way of the handbrake mech and I will need to renew all drums shoes etc anyway crack on next weekend now
