    Weight of your Competition Escort

    Hi Guys,

What sort of corner weights are you guys seeing with your competition escorts?

Just curious to see how my car compares to some race / rally Mk1 and Mk2s...

Any extra info aswell would be usefull... eg Engine / Box / Axle

    Cheers

Re: Weight of your Competition Escort

My MK1 weighed in at 925.5 with 15 litres of fuel on board. Sierra injected Pinto, 19meters of roll cage tubing, Hilux rear end with LSD (total 60 KG) full steel body. glass and all mechanisms. Only one seat, no internal trim except alloy chequerplate front floor plates. Alloy tank on steel platform, leaves and front coilovers. Steel Antidive and overflow tank. It did weigh 930 but i dropped 4.5 machining the flywheel

Re: Weight of your Competition Escort

Mine is full steel shell , no fibreglass full glass house, 2.0l pinto, has the hilux diff and multi leaf springs, themselves probably +10kg's, Volvo 4 piston calipers and BMW vented 280 disks, 2.5mm thick box section anti dive and rear gearbox crossmember, probably too many meters of roll bar tubing. 2.5mm thick Box section seat bars on both sides. thick wall prop shaft, front and rear prop shields
    It doesnt have a heater.
Im guessingthe pinto has to be worth 30-40kgs over a pushrod the hilux is heavy probably another 30kg's the cage may be another 10 kg's heavier than what Ive seen over here. the volvos weigh as much as pluto each so there is maybe 5 kgs each overa wilwood or ap etc. The wheels are street grade performance superlights 14x6 so another 10 perhaps against arace wheel and 205/60/14 tyres are not light, hell I think 2 or 3 of them have tubes to stop them deflating? Has windo winders, door locks, (decorative) full sized alloy tank (too big) three fuel pumps, 2 filters runner hoses which have to be heavier than alloy or copper tube, probably there is 10 kg's of welding wire in seam welding but I imagine most have that. It woudl appear based onthis I have not been serious about building a race car... or too poor.

Keep in Mind hasnt been on a diet yet. an with the cossie will probably get heavier as I have 15x9 inch wheels to go on, capri front struts to convert, but I have the big AP's much lighter than the volvos but bigger again disks 310x32mm and aloy hats to go on. I will be redoing the rear suspension to coilovers and 6 link so heavier again and adding comp or tension struts up front. but will also replace the steel anti dive and gearbox mont with lightweight something.

Its silly little things like lightweight wiring loom(have you felt how heavy they are. Anything not needed is removed so any little bracket goes. Alloy rear dampers, and drilling the car to bits trying to remnove as much as possible.

Its all in the detail, like only running enough fuel for the laps you are going to do (pick up a full jerry can and you will see what i mean)

Thinking about it now, when last weighed with the AX block and bigger wheels it came in at 775kg

Mind you, i am now becoming a fat bastard so any weight saving has been offset

Having said that there was 3 paint jobs on there(original red, white, then the white red green combo),so i reckon if you strip the original paint off it would weigh a lot less

I weighed mine at brands couple if weeks ago and it was 840 wet without me but i still think theres a bit more to come out if it tho, like a propa wireing loom and so on, it has 2.4 steel pinto big 330 brakes but has poly window fibre glass boot bonnet front panel and wings and a big cage but i still think thats quite a low weight for somthink with that spec!!! :-) :-)

Re: Weight of your Competition Escort

A good example is the battery i started with a normal car battery (donīt know the weight anymore) than changed to a AGM dry battery weight 9kg an now on LiFePo cells 2kg. You have to think about all parts you want to mount on the car. I have a single wiper with only a wiper engine from a VW, no rods or anything direct mounted, thats one example it takes me some saturdays to visit some scrap yards to find the right wiper. And it takes some time to get there, but i still have things on the list were I could lose some more weigth.
The other side is I only run a 1.3 xflow with a small 10L tank and stuff like that.

Just finished making some car scales (turned out 100% accurate after calibrating with calibration masses!!) only to find my car is not light at 1041kg with no passengers but with 40L fuel. It is a tarmac rally car so 2 seats, 3 fire extinguisgers, trip meter, plus boat anchor Pinto and Hilux rear end etc... The car came out really well balanced however!

Re: Weight of your Competition Escort

Has a Hilux diff and Kazz LSD which adds quite a bit of weight. Large AP front calipers and 304mm disks. 15's. Dry sumped which would also add a fair bit I guess. Fire bomb plus 2 x 2.5kg hand extinguishers. All glass. Has window winder mechanisms. Washer bottle but I think that was empty when I weighed the car. The wiring loom is fairly extensive with separate circuits for everything so a few extra kg there also. Spare wheel. First aid kit and 3kg of kitty litter. No tools.
