    38 DGES on X-flow

    Hi,

I've bought a new 38 DGES for my Xflow, 1600, BCF2 cam, +.40 pistons, MASS head from one of this forum, because of a bad state of all carbs I have in my garage.
The manifold has been worked to take the larger barrels, I almost start with something identical from 32/36 genuine for the jets.
    145 mains, 165 air, F6 tube, 45 pump jet, idles 45,

But my issue is that when I start the engine rev immediately to 2000-2500 rpm. even with idle screw completely off !

I've notice that one barrel is providing fuel, which is not correct, as at idle it should use the idle jets. Not going thru the nozzles.

I've remove the throttle cable to be sure the butterfly are shut.

I've read all theory of DGAV-DGV-DGES, but I can't find what is running wrong,
Float is set-up as : Redline Weber recommend DGV float settings to be 38.5/46.5mm (plastic float),

    any idea ?

that carb will be horrible on a 1600 x/f, it really isnt suited, you dont have enough cam or engine cc to expoilt it at high revs, and the carbs idle drillings will give rubbish progression at low speed, my advise is find a 32/36

Ok, thanks for you advice, I'll try to find a 32/36 in my cellar, and try to make it like new, otherwise I'll buy a new one.
I've seen in Classic Ford that 32/36 can be modified to synchro carb, like the 38 DGV. Both barrels are opening in same time.
Is it a good idea or not ?

No, in fact it is better to modify the 38dgas to make it sequential!

    Re: 38 DGES on X-flow

    Hello,

is it a 38DGES, or DGMS, or DGAS?
The DGES has an electric choke so it will give a high idle when cold even with the throttle cable removed.

    Re: 38 DGES on X-flow

This is a DGES, but choke is not connected, to be able to see what's going out into barrels.
Had a tried yesterday, but still the same, could not have an idle correctly even before trying on the road, so I've order a new 32/36, filter, and gasket.
I have a second 38 DG with no choke fitted, I had a tried with my previous engine, idle was good but, but top rev were not.
Anyway I'll put it back to genuine setup.
My plan was to try throttle bodies but with our MOT, this is not allowed.
