Alternator position
Hi All
why do many duratec conversions have the alternator on the exhaust side, clearance seems OK on both sides?

Alternator position
I made my brackets for a 1 litre fiesta alternator. Mounted on the inlet side. There is 4 nice big bolt holes to mount it off. Probs cost me £50 in total.

Re: Alternator position
Any reason you chose the Fiesta one? I need to buy one, no idea but dont really want to spend £400 for a Retroford exhaust side one. Will probably go down the MX5 flywheel, clutch, starter motor route like you too as have a NC7 gearbox but these aren't cheap either.

Re: Alternator position
What’s the reason you can’t use a standard fitment alternator for a duratec their available in left and right fitment I’m in the process of doing mine on the exaust side right now all be it with a small issue to resolve but once I’m over that it’s simple

Re: Alternator position
No reason, just wondered why retroford and others put it on exhaust side. Thought about std duratec alternator but I think they are all ECU controlled. Ive got a Raceline one coming now, not cheap unfortunately.

Re: Alternator position
I chose a fiesta alternator purely as it looked easy to make a bracket for and it came fitted with the right pulley for the belt. I fixed it solid and used a galaxy tensioner at the top of the engine as per the standard position. It has an output and a control wire not connected. I have had it running and it gives out plenty of voltage after a rev (who doesn't rev an escort). Best of all they cost about £30 secondhand delivered.
