    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Tempoary turbo and exhaust manifold for the moment to get it running and some miles on it and then it will be swapped over to the Holset and and different manifold. Inlet manifold is changing too, and the colour of the car is changing as well but all will be revealed in good time on that one!

I'm looking forward to seeing this at classic ford, like the idea of that custom down pipe from the std exhaust manifold too.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Im hoping it'll be there Alexz I am going all out to make it, if not i will take a trip to essex!

If I did it I would make it more rounded but for a low boost aplication it is pretty simple and effective!

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Would be a great nippy escort with that small turbo, much more my cup of tea than a big powered undrivable one. If I see you about I'll take you out in my one if you want to compare, its nothing special, just a t3 at about 9psi, about 200bhp but it goes well, hopefully it does make it, engine is built and gearbox fitted and hopefully going in this weekend, just gotta run it in then and pray I get no issue lol

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Shiny manifold looks to be well made, will see once it is on the car. The standrad manifold is home made, not the best job, I might refine it once it has served it's purpose. Sadly there are no off the shelf parts for pinto turbo's hence why it has taken me this long to get it sorted out and decide which direction it is going in.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Well it is no longer black I have changed the colour but all will be revealed soon once I have finished painting it, think it will be marmite you will either love it or hate it, but personally I love it and it is my car and I am happy how it looks.

Awaiting on some more an adaptors to arrive and some more fuel line and then the lines are run, just need to source a cosworth starter motor and we should be good to turn it over. Will add some more pictures and updates once it is a bit further on, hopefully be on the road soon!

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Wow I can't believe it's been a year and half since I last updated this!!

Well the car is still not running, what with getting married and moving house in the same year and losing my mum the car has taken a back seat in things sadly. It's still here with me and will still be a turbo pinto. Should have some decent updates this weekend as it's really not that far off now. Car is currently with Pro-line Motorsport ( http://www.prolinemotorsport.co.uk/ ) having the fuel system sorted out, fuel lines and brake lines all done, turbo lines, breathers and a few other bits and bobs sorted out.

Should have some pictures this weekend.

Well I promised a long overdue update so here it is, not far off now, wiring and a few other bits and it should be good to start!

Engine bay shot with the turbo mounted up:

Fuel system - All done by the very talented Mitch @ Pro-Line Motorsport, runnina facet red top to fill the swirl pot and then a bosch 044 to push it forward, all done in braided hose in the boot and inside of the car all with ProGold fittings:

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Well I'm still plodding on with this one and there has been more progress even if it is slow moving. The car now has a proper custom made twin scroll manifold and is running 2 wastegates, full 3 inch downpipe and system all the way back. It was built by Matt at Fusion Fabrications who has done an excellent job of making it all fit.

Not much left to finish now and what was supposed to be a quick engine swap has gone on many years but I'm finally at the point where things are done right and don't need to be be redone or changed.

just an observation - tubular manifolds get a little 'flexible' with turbo heat - I think i'd be adding a bracket to support / hang the turbo, shame for it to crack under the strain?

It's a satin finish out of a rattle can for the moment, it's looking filthy in the pictures needs a good clean but has come out OK for a quick dust with primer and then paint over the top. It'll do for the moment need to get it up and running before I worry about getting it painted!

It's made pretty strong although I am not sure there is anywhere to put a brace/support for it, only thing I can think would be like the YB turbo one where it is supported off the cam cover although the pinto one is only tin and would look a little out of place!?

I had a brace from the bottom of the turbo to the engine mount, though I need to make a new one as found it had broken when I stripped everything down for this seasons rebuild.

i had same issue with tubular turbo manifolds, if you braced them the braces broke when it got hot and everything expanded, the only thing which seems to work ok is a bailey style rose joined brace as used with sierra cosworths when you have a 2wd exhaust manifold and 4wd head

Will let you know what i come up with. It’s a while off yet as engine won’t be back in for a while. I like the coming off the engine mount rubber I had before so might just re-engineer that to allow for expansion.

Hopefully will get some interesting videos on the engine build as the guy doing it may doing some timelapse of the work he does.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Well this a thread I'd totally forgotten about and is well over due a massive update! The car is finally on the road and has been mapped by Steve and Steve at Track and Road in Essex. It wasn't without some issues and a long evening but the car performed well and is still in 1 piece.

It made 287bhp with only 16/17psi of boost (wastegate pressure) and makes that pressure at around 3500rpm (big turbo but twin scroll comes in quite early) and holds it all the way to the redline at 7200rpm. Will be going back once I've re routed the vaccum lines for the wastegate's to turn up the boost and see what it's really capable of. Just putting some miles on the car, fixing other little issues that have popped up but feels good, feels pretty fast too now I'm getting used to how the car handles again.

has been mapped by Steve and Steve at Track and Road in Essex. It wasn't without some issues and a long evening but the car performed well and is still in 1 piece.
ha,ha theres always issues and its always a long day at T+R, they never start very early and its always a late finish, and you always need to go back to try and finish the job
