    fitting fibreglass wings?

i have just bought a pair of fibreglass wings for my mk1 escort, how should these be fitted?

can i just rivet them into place or should they be bonded, i wanted them to be easily removable

Also how do i prep them before painting? just plain old red oxide primer? or should something specialist be used for fibreglass?

    cheers,

plenty have bolted them on with nut and bolts, or used rivet nuts

rivnuts are good, i just fitted a set of wings to my escort and they are only held on with about 5 self tappers, been 70mph with em like that, so you dont have to go mad with the fixings. the fixings down the front panel are tricky, personally i would bond them there and bolt/rivnut/screw the a panel, wing rail etc etc

I've got mine on with windscreen bonding, They will never move , and still allows them to flex with the shell.

    That's just my preference.

    This windscreen bonding....

is it a permanent thing like sikaflex or gripfill or will it still be easily removable in future using brake cable wire etc...

certainly worth considering, i may even rivet it on complimented by a bead of that windscreen bonding stuff

    has it got a name?

Yes mate the stuff i used was sikaflex, Its as permanent as it could be, the only way to get it off is by cutting it or cheese wire, my fibregalss wings have bee on 8 yrs and no signs of movement what so ever, . its personal choice but with riv nuts you have the heads showing and plus you have to drill the thinnest part of the wings and also the weakest part. hence the reason i used bonding. The only awkward part is making sure they dont move after you have the lines while it goes off. Mine was 20 mins setting time but a day to cure.

These are just my opinion and may not be shared by others but it was just an extra thought for you.

I will tryand get some pics of mine tomorrow for you , then you can make up your own mind.

Further to add don't forget to sctchbrite them before you give them a couple of coats of isolator before priming and do not break the glazing on the outer case, or else it will be a bitch to isolate if you do.

I put 5 rivnuts along the drip rail, then i welded tabs down the front panel and drilled holes so they could be bolted there and i put a nice rubber gasket inbetween the front panel and the wings, then 2 more rivnuts down the back of the wing, hope that makes sense il try take some pics for you but its pi55ing down at the mo

That's how I did mine. Went a lot more than 70mph with them too.
