Type - 9 xflow to english queries
Hi Folks,
i just have 2 quick questions im sure someone knows off the top of their head.
Firstly, is an Auto or rs2000 prop the only option i have? does anything else come with a prop that will fit a mk2 escort with an xflow-type9?
secondly, what is the most cost effective way (if any) of getting a longer 1st gear into the type 9 to reduce that big gap? is an off the shelf gear kit the only option ?
cheers gents

Re: Type - 9 xflow to english queries
yes auto or rs prop are only options.
re first gear, 3 options,
1 get a 2.8i v6 box that has a longer 1st 3.3 iirc. Infact the 1st 4 ratios are the same as rs1800
2 buy a whole gear kit
3 BGH/burtons sell a long 1st gearbox, which uses a longer first mated to std 2,3,4,5th

Re: Type - 9 xflow to english queries
thanks graham, kind of confirmed all my suspicions
no1 i already have the box, but i might try and sell on or px for a 2.8 box. this may be my only option as the other two are not even in the running with my budget sadly!
i need to do something as i use the car for autotesting too and going into second with a cammy engine is a joke

Re: Type - 9 xflow to english queries
what diff ratio and tyre size you running?
it may be that fitting a 4.4 diff and using 50 profile 13 inch tyres drops the gearing enough that you can forget about 1st gear altogether and use 2nd as your bottom gear

Re: Type - 9 xflow to english queries
im running a 4.1 and 175/65/13 for auto testing - 185/60/13 for endurance rallies.
im in a bit of a catch 22 i think, if i do that and put in a 4.4 or a 4.7 il be back up to cruising revs of a 4 speed only il be in 5th! i need a decent cruising speed in 5th as the car is a jack of all trades, i also do the endurance rally season in it and drive to all of the events, plus there's 3/400 road miles during the events, so a bit of cruising comfort is a must.
does anyone just sell a '1st gear kit' by any chance no? seems mad that no one has done it when its the type9's main achilles heel.

Re: Type - 9 xflow to english queries
bgh/burtons do just a 1st gear kit, but because gears are permanently attached to the layshaft its not a straight forward case of swapping gear, gears have to be ground off the layshaft and the shaft modified to take new gears so its not exactly cheap but cheaper than a full gearkit

yeah haha that kit is about 700 quid over my budget never mind the machining. i think my best bet is try and swap to a 2.8 box and get the input shaft machined, thanks graham.

Re: Type - 9 xflow to english queries
if your carefull the 2.8 input shaft mods can be done with an angle grinder, you need to shorten the shaft and grind back the sline section a bit. there are plenty out there who have done it with an angle grinder so its not hard.

this is the kit

if the rest of your box is ok then you will only need to add some gaskets/oil on top of the price of the kit. you can mod the casing with a die grinder to clear the bigger gear, all provided you know your way around a greasy box!!
before you go for the capri 2.8 box option have a look at the gear ratios, even tho the first gear is lower than the standard sierra box the gap from 1st to second is almost the same, as second gear is lower too.
