Mark, when you weld the new inner wing in do you use a weld thru primer? Also when weldings finished do you seal the welded seams with anything?

    Cheers

    Steve,

I never use weld through primer, I have tried various ones but didn't like them much, they tend to catch alight, and they burn away from the weld anyway, which is where it needs most protection because of the heat build up (makes it rust quicker if unprotected)

The best thing to do is spray some primer in there then seal the edges with a good quality panel seam sealer, make sure you get it right in with no gaps.

    Duncan
I will keep the pics coming as it progresses, they are also on my website if you want to see more,

No Clint hasn't got his hands dirty on it yet, but he is rebuilding my Cossie engine for me, so fair exchange and all that.

    Re: My MK2 Restoration

This Saturday was spent getting bits together and making a replacement panel for the rotten chassis rail section.

After removing the offside inner wing I found a rotten area of chassis, this is not available as a new part so one had to be made.

I enlisted the steel fabrication skills of Rob Doyle (Mr Hoarder) who first made a template of the offending area.

    Re: My MK2 Restoration

Once the template was made Rob then proceeded to cut, shape, drill and bend the sheet steel, until it was a exact match for the original panel.

    Re: My MK2 Restoration

Once that was complete I started the task of scraping and picking clean the areas where the inner wing will be attached.

These show the inner wing being "offered up", once straight and in the right place, holes are drilled and punched to weld through in place of the original spots.

Once happy with the position the inner wing was then welded in place.

Then it was time to hang the front panel on and get out the grinder to make room for "That Intercooler"

And it does fit a treat.

    Re: My MK2 Restoration

Yesterdays efforts started off with a shopping trip to Machine Mart, where I treated myself to a new plasma cutter. It makes life so much easier when you have to cut large chunks off of cars.
I think Clint's car will give me something to practice using it on.

    Re: My MK2 Restoration

I seam welded the Nearside inner wing today, then used the plasma cutter on what was left of the front lower cross member, taking out this bit would provide some more airflow through the intercooler.
Unfortunately it was now very weak, so I cut and shaped some steel to create a box section in the middle of this panel, which has restored the strength to this area.

After finishing the inner wing and front box section, I welded the front panel in to place,

Before attacking the offside bulkhead side area with the plasma cutter.
