What's the t5 weigh compared to rx8 6 speed any ideas ?
theirs an old type 9 gearbox buried under some duratec engines at the back of the garage i will dig it out today and get a definite weigh off between the 5 speed rx8 and the 5 speed type 9
Just been out to measure my 6 speed RX8 - so -
Type 9 without bell housing - 31.5kg
Ally bell housing for Sigma/Zetec SE - 4.5kg
Not measures a steel bell housing - but Steel/Iron is approx 3x density of aluminium so could be around 12-15kg
RX8 6 speed box (includes bell housing and clutch fork etc.) - 46.5kg
So RX8 is about the same as a Type 9 and iron bell housing but 10kg heavier than with ally bellhousing.
Hope this helps.

so thats sorted the "light rx8 gearbox" myth out,
Must admit, the use of this gearbox was never about lightweight as far as I can tell, the benefit is a low cost box (£100-150 for the box an same again for the adaptor) that has half decent ratios, fits directly to a ford clutch/spigot bearing and will handle upto 250hp. The comparison is a spc/bgh/first motion/quaife/tranx HD type 9 close ratio at £1500+.

yes your right , type 9 quaife or tranx cost loads the rx8 would be the best option but my car is a tiger r6 , that is used for the race track so it relay does mater to me , if i can loose 10kg somewhere on the car i will go forward with the mazda box, any one got any alloy cortina uprights john
Sure cosy t5 weight is 100 kg lol it's massive
that is a lot , dont think my engine is as heavy as that,
It's not 10kg lighter tho ? The guess was that it was =
?
Type 9 doesn't come with an alloy bh it's cast iron
There you go don't put a rx8 box in because it's stronger but weighs the same as a shitty type 9 unless you spend a bomb on an overly expensive ally bell housing. ...marvelous...
the type 9 gearbox 31.5kg the rx8 gearbox 42kg with out the bell house on , every one uses alloy bell house dont we, theres a alloy bell house in my garage that i am sick of tripping over that came off a type 9 2.8 or 2.9 v6 as standard , , but yes them cast ones are heavy
I will weigh them out of interest as it really did seem noticeable lighter.
But if it's really ultimate speed your after then I will wager the close ratio box car eats the 10kg lighter car for breakfast
Yes i could go with that, good point,
i will after admit i dont like the type 9 box, i have been looking at what could be cut off the rx box to save weight , think i may be wasting my time especially with it been alloy , would be nice if i could get the carbon propshaft shortened somewhere , any one done this feel free to let us all know ,i have been told the bmw 1.8 gearbox is a good option , will let you know which way i go,
dont call me sad but i weighed them today
not being argumentative, i genuinely carried them both a fortnight ago and thought the rx box was much lighter - must have been the shape was easier on my old back, its only 2kg lighter.
both boxes had std b/h , stick , bearing and arm. both had a small comparable mount (non std t9) but tp9 had a prop end in it to stop oil leaking in my car. neither actually has any amount of oil.
type 9 46.9 kg
rx8 44.5 kg
not a scientific scales, just an argos digital (that says i need a diet )
to save me 16 pages of searching, could anyone (john?) reconfirm the ratios?
have you any plan to do up a guide John on the parts and mods that are needed all in one place to save people asking the same question over and over again? (like me )
so its the cast iorn bell house you must have on your type nine thats tipping the scales well yes your right with the standard type 9 bell house attached not much between them ,any helpful comments are always welcome, were only try to help each other out ,
6 speed rx8 box 1st 3.81 2nd 2.26 3rd 1.64 4th 1.18 5th 1.0 6th .84 ,my plan was not to buy the steel adapter plate (weight) thats on the market but to make my own from 10mm alloy , no spigot shaft extension ( duratec 2.3 engine) , have the rx bell house milled down, some off gearbox side some off the engine side of the bell house , props £80 pound to make right , alloy plate aprox £40 ,
From my search the ratios are - 3.76, 2.269, 1.645, 1.187, 1.00 .843
Beware the bmw boxes, they are some very strange ratios out there, 120d one looks interesting.

i tried to get the carbon prop shortened and the porp shop wouldn't touch it as they were worried that cutting the steel ends and welding them back together would damage the carbon fiber that is bonded to the steel ends. This is not to say it couldn't be don though. But if a buissness of 35 years in the prop buissness won't do it i kind of thought that was telling me something. The prop will weigh less than a normal escort one anyway as the tube is 2" shorter
Throw all that scaffolding away 😊
LOL nice one , i need it spend more time on the grass than the tarmac
Hi Everyone,
I've been following this discussion with interest as I'm looking to put an RX8 box in my Gilbern Invader. The V6 expired and I may rebuild it, I may put in a Cologne or I may fit a zetec. I've tried to get a handle on the gearbox ratios in conjunction with diff ratios to see if I can get a meaningful comparison. The table below is the 1000rpm speed of various configurations. Sorry it a bit of a scribble but I wasn't intending to share it when I did it.
In the square is the 6speed RX8 with the Gilberns 3.3 ratio diff, which I think will work quite well with a Zetec. Above that is the RX8 5 speed with the 3.3 diff, which I think will be about right behind a V6. The top line is the current 4speed +OD box for comparison.

On the carbon prop shaft topic, I don't think it's an issue of it can't be done, it's just that the prop shaft guys don't have any experience with the material so don't want to touch it. It is most likely to be a bonding exesize rather than a welding one so perhaps talk to Alex at Idol Composites and see what he says. Www.idolcomposites.co.uk
kooda i think you may be running the wrong diff ratio unless you thinking of putting a blke engine in later, have a look at this gearbox calculater it may help you regards john
http://johnmaherracing.com/calculato...io-calculator/
Hi John,
Any example in particular?
I used this calculator here: http://www.car-videos.net/tools/spee...B1=Recalculate
And when I run an example through both calculators I come up with very similar numbers. The one I used has a built in factor of 0.965 for various factors, which then makes the numbers comparable. The JMR one starts at 1500rpm where I'm using 1000rpm.
What you really need to consider is that other that overdrive gears ie lower than 1.0 to 1
The box is irrelevant it's the diff and wheel size that makes the overall gearing
The box ratios are about nice spacing for acceleration
kooda i don`t think it would bother me too much where the rpm starts 1000 or 1500 rpm on the calculators , i think i would look more at final rev range and speed ,don`t know what the v6 zetec revs to a rough guess 7000 rpm , bmw 1.8is e36 getrag box year 1996 ish , alloy weighs 29 to 30 kg , diff ratio similar to yours ,i think that gearbox would suit your car better, only a small box. yes i know there different splines but thats not a problem , you can buy these boxs for around £60, interesting car is that gilbern , fiberglass body?
Perhaps, I might be better off asking a question.
If installing say an ST170 in a Mk2 Escort with a Type 9 for road use, what would be the suggested gearbox ratios, diff ratio, and tyre size?
Gear ratios depend on the box. Fitted.
To get close ratios for a t9 they are either strait cut ( v. Noisy for road) or v. Expensive.
Tyre size 185 60 13 ? With a 3.5-1 diff or 3.9 for better acceleration ? Nothing that's uncommon on escorts
You tell me. What would you fit?
185/60/13 with 3.5 diff (good cruise speed and std in rs2000) and rx8 box for close ratios on the cheap. otherwise just std type9 as the cost of a non strait cut close ratio t9 is prohibitive to me.
