    Rear wheel bearings, position?

    Hi guys,

I have to replace my rear wheel bearings. I have pulled out the half shafts, and will be removing the old bearings this afternoon.

But how do I position the new bearings correctly, should they just be pushed all the way down? Untill they can't go any further?

As I seem to remember the Haynes manual saying something about a specific length down they should be positioned/at a specific amount of "torque press".

    Any advice appreciated.

    English axle btw.

    Side question

Is the the correct orientation of the bearing?

Oh and should I smear any grease on the halfshaft when pushing the bearing on, or lube up the rear axle when fitting shafts again? Or just go in dry?

the side you have marked as inner is the outer.

fit the bearing to the shaft dry. shaft and bearing should go in the axle dry but a thin smear of silicon on the outside of the bearing will help prevent leaks

    Hmm...

Are you completely sure that was the right way of fitting the bearings Graham, as the bearing now sits right up against the backplate, and won't turn?

perhaps my memory has failed me, but together with the generous radius, on one side which i recall is to clear a similar radius on the half shaft i was sure i told you right, sorry if im wrong

    Re: Rear wheel bearings, position?

Think it was the wrong way around mate, and bearing actually had a generous radius on both side of bearing. But I managed to flick together a press tool, so I could get them off again.

But maybe the bearings will be shot now, but I'm in a bit of a tight schedule due to hopefully a MOT during next week, so I can get out and about this summer holiday. So I just turned them around, and then they will have to last as long as can.

But no worries mate, I pushed them on my self, and still thanks for you "help" I learned something, and now got a tool for easy removal next time

neat work nice tool that wont of hurt them so as long as the bearings were still a tight fit on the shaft they will be fine

Yeah mate, worked like a charm And didn't even seem to have damaged the mounting plate, so that's great.

Think I will do a small conversion to it, so it also can be used for pulling out the halfshafts.

Seemed to still need about 2tons of pressure to be fitted, so think we're good

If your using the car for track or anything other than light rd use put a couple of small tack welds on the bearing retaining collar also to hold it onto the shaft as they are notorious for come loose allowing the shaft to pop right out, it's happened twice to me.
