Firing up a YB thats been sat for a few years ??

    Hi Folks,

First off, hello aain everyone... Im back!

Right, I am looking to fire up my YB engine tonight for the forst time in a few years and am wondering if there is anything I should do first, based on your experiences?

There was zero fuel in there, so small traces in the system are about 3 months old. But I will pour in some fresh. Oil is as new and filer was new when last started but has been sat so after initial fire up and run I will dump this later. I will just run up on normal water for time being to check everything over, then drain after a flush and use proper coolant later.

Over the past few years all I have ever done is push the starter to turn the engine over, but never fired it.

Anything else I should consider prior to pushing the button??

    Cheers

    Dave

Main thing is Oil to the top , lubrication , as said always turn over before hand

Ive heard people take the plugs out and squirt a dab of oil on the piston , either when storeing, or before start up

I suppose where its been stored could also factor in , damp ignition - etc

Its dry as a dry thing and has been baking hot in the shed the past few weeks so all good on that front. Engine has been say but cranked over on the starter many times while its been sat. In fact I have had it spinning over tonight, but no fuel connected.

Do you reckon it will fire without accelerator press to get some fuel in there? Pedal box not fully set up just yet see.

    Cheers

To be safe I would pull the plugs to unload the crank and starter so to speak, stop the ignition spark and turn over until you have good oil pressure ie til the oil light goes out, least you will have piece of mind that there's plenty of oil up in the head before you fire her up!

Plenty of Easy Start and rev the bollocks off it.

    Hey Dave, hows tricks!

Right folks, got everything in order tonight but the bloody thing wont fire!! I am guessing there is fuel as I can hear the pump going and when I switch off I can hear the return line flowing back into the tank. Checked the spark and there was one. The starter sounds real strong and spinning nicely. But not even a cough from the engine??

I removed the plugs and they were not wet, like I expected, but more of a damp soot? I brushed them up and tried again and still nothing?

You reckon easy start would just give it a boost then??

A mate has suggested that crank sensors can give up if they are left sat. Would this make a difference?

I am over it now... Grrrr!!!

If there is a spark the problem is not the crank sensor.
Open the distributor cap and make sure everything is in order there.

Id also take out the plugs and put a squirt of engine oil into the cylinders, the oil will help raise compression a bit by helping the rings seal a bit better.

first off put some new plugs it it, sooted up plugs may not fire.

i have have an engines where the injectors have stuck shut after years of being laid up, daves easy start suggestion isnt a bad one, if it will fire up on that then you know the ignition system is in order, so then you are looking for a fuel system fault. 99.9% of the time if you have sparks then you will also get injector switching, leaving either a supply fault such fuel ines to regulator/rail being wrong way round or gummed up injectors

If you are going the Easy Start route (which I wasn't being completely serious about at the time) get yourself an aerosol of brake cleaner and use that instead.
Does the same as easy start but without that god awful knocking.

I will get a can of start ya bastard and give it a go!!

I am now also suspecting stuck injectors. I do have a spare set of new greens I could stick in just to try. Are they easy enough to clean up when removed?

The plugs were not sooted really, just trying to explain the consistency of what was on them when I removed them. They are pretty much new with regards to use as the car has never been driven since they were put in.

In my experience, it doesn't matter how new or old spark plugs are, if they get wet or damp, more often than not they are never right afterwards.

Before you do anything else do as Dave and Graham suggested, squirt of easystart (or brake cleaner), crank it and if it fires you know you have a fuel supply problem, if it doesn't fire you likely have a spark problem.

    Hiya,
I’m trying to track down a car from a friends farther, I see on his sale post from 2008 you commented saying you’d brought it, it was the ford anglia with the cosworth swap, by any chance did you buy this car? If so do you still have it? They’d love to see if it’s still around and running!
    Regards
    Becky

The guy hasn't been on here since October 2016 so is unlikely to see your post - the thread is 7+ years old!
