    The Story

    Andy Pipe
Is an electrician from Essex, so it’s no wonder that as a lad he grew up around Escorts and had a few on the road himself. Now blatting around the roads of Essex in a fast Escort isn’t any fun when you can’t go faster than the law allows, so with more than a little help from his dad, John, Andy decided to go racing for real.
This was all back in 1992, a rusty, tired old nail was found in a scrap yard and painstakingly rebuilt as a race car to compete in the Falken Tyres Championship. Andy did quite well, a first in class and a lap record to his credit, all being helped by the fact that back then, Andy was 6 stone when soaking wet. At the end of the 1993 race series, Andy being the genuine nice chap he is, lent the car to Ray Donner who promptly sent the car flying through the air, the old adage "you bend it you mend it" ringing in his ears.
Ray rebuilt the car into the Acid Yellow Escort we see today, it needed new wings, rear quarters, roof, back panel, oh and the rear suspension too. Ray flexed the wings out to allow a little more clearance and also took all unnecessary metal out the doors and other areas. The fuel cell is mounted under the car and this means the firewall can be left out, again saving weight. The front suspension hangs off a World-Cup x-member and includes all the goodies, rose-jointed TCA’s, fully adjustable struts with concentric spherical bearing top mounts stopping the 800lbs springs popping of the ends. The 2 sides are held together buy a 24mm roll bar held in solid mounts with anti-dive geometry, turning is by a 2.2 turns lock-to-lock rack. With all the trick stuff up the front sorted the back end is hampered by the rule makers, no cutting of the floor pan is allowed so the car was built using 3.1 RS Capri springs with additional spring helpers to balance the spring weights, anti-tramp bars with a Panhard rod help to keep things in the right places. Inside the English axle lives Quaife fully floating shafts and a 4.4 to 1 LSD.
Now with all that hardware under the shell, Andy needed a 1600 cc engine that would hurtle this car around the tracks, and stay together for more than a few hours. Enter Dave Wells. He went to work and built a motor that screams all the way to 9000 rpm, yet has remained in fine fettle for more years than it should do really considering the numbers it produces. It’s an all steel affair inside with 50 DCOE’s fuelling to the biggest valves you can get in a x-flow. These are opened and closed by an A8 cam with standard Ford rockers, the roller ones kept on breaking! The exhaust manifold is fabricated with matching primary lengths and takes up most of the room in the engine bay. When it was first built the engine had its lifeblood sucked out of a heavily baffled wet sump by a high capacity oil pump, but with a change of rules allowing
Dry-sumping, this has been changed to the far more efficient Titan dry sump system.
The Carbs and Ignition timing where all set up by Steve Greenald of Race Engine Calibrations, 07774773824, This engine Idles after about a minute of warm up and sounds like it has a GT cam not race one.
Stopping all of this was going to involve some better brakes than the drums the car came with, so in went the bias pedal box, to balance up the locking points of the Fiesta1100 calipers and discs at the rear and Wilwood 4 pots clamping 310mm vented and grooved disc’s up front. The Tyres have change with every race series, Falken’s in the Falken championship, Toyo’s in the Toyo championship, and now Andy is enjoying Michelin slicks in the Lydden Hill Championship, But he has kept faithful to his revolution five spokes, why? "Cos they work".
Recent developments with the car Have meant Retromotorsports ltd, 01279 452799, getting involved with running the car, and along with a few other things the team is trying out different rear suspensions. Last time out the car was tried with a "ladder bar" set up, and although this gave excellent grip and axle control, the roll stiffness was too much, so next time out it will be using a different arrangement. Who knows where this development will end up, Perhaps a bolt in independent rear!!!!!
    Tech Spec
Bodyshell 1971 base shell, with post ’73 damper mounts welded in, full Safety Devices cage, lightened steel bonnet, boot and doors. Fuel tank and battery under boot floor, flared arches.
Engine 711M 1600cc, block, steel crank, rods and lightened steel flywheel, forged pistons, UBV full race head, A8 cam, twin 50 DCOE’s, dry-sump and high capacity oil pump.
Transmission Close ratio 2000e Gearbox with Tran-X Straight cut internals, Reco-Prop single piece prop, bronze sintered clutch, English Axle with 4.4 plate LSD.
Brakes 310mm vented discs, with Wilwood four-pot Calipers, up front, and at the rear Fiesta callipers and discs, (later changed to Escort MK3 discs and Cosworth calipers.
Suspension World Cup x-member, Spherical bearing TCA’s. Anti-dive with solid anti-roll bar mounts, Fully adjustable struts with anywhere between 450 and 800 lbs/inch springs, Spherical bearing top mounts.
    The rear still under development.
Wheels (dry) 7x15 Revolution five-spokes with Michelin slicks, (damp) Peugeot Mi16 with Yokohama 032’s (wet) Compomotive MO with Avon’s
Interior Corbeau Pro-Race seat, Sparco steering wheel mount on an extended and quick-release column, Tacho, oil and water gauges, shift and warning lights, Lifeline Zero 2000 plumb in extinguisher, and a small racing driver.

    Thanks To

Ray Donner (Preptech Racing) for originally doing the body shell excellent job, still looks good.
Dave wills for that peach of an engine
Steve Greenald for setting up the engine
John and Steve Pipe for all the enthusiasm and hard work not to mention CASH
Dave white for the new wheels (nearly paid for them)
Step son Alex for being an ace junior chief mechanic
Oiley (Paul Lane) for the trackside support
The missus for not getting the Hump every 2 weeks when I go racing
Me, for being such a good driver
Me Mum, for no having a headache the night I was conceived
The Royal Oak, Highams Park, For the de-briefing Room (and post race piss-ups)
Oh yeah, Gary @ Retro Motorsport, for his help, time, excellent fabrication
skills, enthusiasm, etc etc etc in making an already great car even better.

(the above was written for a page on www.classicrsfords.co.uk ,thanks Duncan)

You should all know my one by now. It was built in 1991-92 from a 1100 shell that was found in a scrap yard. The shell was prepared by Ray Donner of Preptech Racing and the 1600 X Flow short stroke built by Dave Wills and Steve Greenauld of the Lotus Servicentre in Ilford. The car uses a 2000e bullit box with Tran-X internals and an english axle. the rear suspension is a development 5 link system designed by Gary @ Retromotorsport. The car is currently being run in the BARC SEC TRC championship in association with Dunlop. Will post 2006 dates when i get them

A few updates and mods have been done ready for the 06 season which were finished off today. All we are waiting on now is the painting of the new bonnet and boot. Overall the car should be a lot lighter this year

New breather lines and general tidy up in engine bay

Big battery and box removed from boot....

....and replaced with small race battery and a lot less cable

If mine needs to be altered then Andy can have mine and you can have his.
Or get Gary to make you a nice weld in one and weld the brackets on yourself, they are the best type

I'm not desperate for one, was just going to buy Andy's as he was selling it. If he is keeping it, it is no problem.
It suits the car as it is.

I was going to have a weld in one installed along with Gary's adjustable top mounts when i had the bigger gearbox tunnel installed. But the rule makers wont allow it and would put me in class A so didnt have the work done. Might do it over the winter and say bollox to them (sorry Mr Bahr). The rules now allow me to 5 link and turret, so might do that as well . Sorry Dave Roberts

No worries about the strut brace Andy.
Gary, why do you want to put bubbles on it?
Is it just because you like bubbles and have to put them on everything,
or is it for bigger tyres. The tyres are pretty large as they are aren't they?

Your not allowed to mention that book ....

We did think about doing a quick release to separate the bellhousing and box... maybe thats the way forward untill larger tunnels are not deemed a performance modification and its just to take the pains in the arris out of racing (not a dig at you Graham, its the way of the world and the new TRC rules are the most fair i've seen for ages) Luck has been with Andy and he hasnt had a total clutch failure or box failure in the last few years, its just with a 2 race format its a niggle that there may not be enough time between races to swap boxespray:

As for an Atlas.... until Andy runs BDA (anyone got one they need using instead of gathering dust ) torque through that English its staying put.... Unless Tom needs a tester for the the Hush Hush Light Weight Race Atlas

As for the bubbles... Andy runs a bit of rubber but he can still unstick the rear at will and he can lock the fronts, with a wider tyre we could go even softer and hence more grippier tyre .... shorter time on the brakes for the same retardation and possibly(probably) more speed through the apex. As Andy's car has no grunt to speak of all his gains have to be in the corners, the quicker he can get into them and around and out of them the better.... with the hope that hes allready a long way down the straights before the bigger boys want their bit of track back...

I've seen Andy racing, and wouldn't have thought he took much notice of what they wanted.
I saw him persistantly ignoring a fist waving chap in a black Nissan.
(I'm sure there is a pic of the occasion on here somewhere.)
Wouldn't putting bubbles on make the car a bit closer to the one alongside. More risk of paint swapping? Or is that another thing that gets ignored.

andy could fit an atlas under the existing rules, cant see why he would want to though unless he fits a bigger engine with bigger tyres.

the problem with the gearbox tunnel is the MSA wont allow the regs to say you cant modify the origonal floor pan unless you want to put a bigger tunnel in an escort. the ruling has to be non car specific, so if we allowed tunnel modifications in escorts then we would have to allow it in everything and with classes B-E we want the cars to be production based and dont want the body shells hacked around.

    Re: andypipe's - MK1 Escort - xflow

A big well done to Andy Pipe as he came second in class yesterday at Lydden despite now having to run in class D (up to 2 litre) and having a comedy diff (unless we broke the other Q shaft )

Andy had a great second race and had a long dice with Alex Ribbens (2 litre GP2 arched mk2 soon to appear in a poular Ford mag ) that entertained the crowd lap after lap. Andy held Alex off until halfway when Alex used the extra torque of the 2 litre to get past going into paddock. One lap later and Andy was sizing Alex up into the same bend hoping to cut back on the exit but Alex went too defensive and overcooked it, going across the gravel trap and coming out the otherside backwards narrowly missing Andy. Alex was beached and Andy had to fight off a mk4 escort and try to catch the eventual class d winner, in an Alfa GTV, however the diff started to slip worse and worse meaning whole lock levels of oversteer on what was otherwise a sweet handling car.
He settled for second in class but it was a shame as he has regularly beaten the Alfa this year.
Still a good day all round and all the results will be posted asap along with some excellent incar footage (once its edited).
Cheers to Jimbo for all the assistance as Gary had to appear at a local fete or something
The diff will be out this week and we cant wait for brands now as the car is getting better and better. We couldn't run the new rear Dunlops for the second race as they would have cooked in the heat with all the oversteer but next time out we should really see what they can do, the ones on the front worked like a dream.
As they say watch this space

    Well done to Andy,
I was wondering how he got on.
And well done to his crew too for helping out instead of going to the local fete.
When is Brands? (I know I should look it up)

BTW Mr Bahr didnt have a bad day either . I think he had a second in class in the first race and last I saw he was on to repeat that in the second, despite crashing into a tin opener
I'll let him explain but lets just say he peeled back the whole front wing and it serves him right for picking on a poor old mk2 escort
