I got my car from New Zealand recently. AVO sent some knocked down RS1600's to NZ in the early 1970's to support the works cars at the 1971 Silver Fern Rally - they won. My car is one of those - it's a RS1600 with BDA with a Quaiffe Dog Box. It's got all the usual rally mods - 4 link, bubbles, Billies etc. etc.

The car was recently rebuilt to original specs when it was built by Ford NZ so it is set up for rallying. It's running a 5.14 CWP in an Atlas diff. This is great for rallying - but at 110 m.p.h. its far too slow for racing. I got a 4.1 CWP from Fossie - we'll install it over the winter and should get about 140 m.p.h. from it.

We had the car out this past weekend at Mont Tremblant, a very nice 2.8 mile track just north of Montreal. My son drove it in the middle of a rainstorm - you can see the in car at:

http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=975388414489914003&hl=en-CA

The track was flooded, so the fact that he was running the wrong CWP didn't really matter. You can see he won - the conditions were difficult, but as it is a rally car after all, it really comes back quickly from skids!

Enjoy the movie :woohoo:

Looks like an excellent prepared car !!
May I ask where did you get the full-length drain-sump from?
And does it have lowered rack mounts (with cranked steering arms)?

Hi Miniliteman

Thanks for your comments about my RS1600.

I think the BDA drysump came from Burton Power - they have tone of BDA stuff.

I'm not sure I understand your other questiion - I don't think the steering arms are cranked - they look normal to me. We race to pre 1973 preparation standards so I've not done a lot of later mods to the car as I'll only get into a bitching session with our eligibility guys. We're racing this weekend at Mosport so I'll take a pic. of the setup for you.

It does look like your car has a lowered rack height x-member with standard angle steering arms.
Have you checked for bumpsteer?

Fantastic car Walt - and great to see it's being used properly. :thumb: have you tried it on 13" wheels? Would look more "period" and (from my experience) probably handle better too... Might cock up your plans for ratio changes though!

That video was excellent too... :)

Oh, and is that CWP on your side of the pond yet? :D

Tom - thanks. I've got a clearance from eligibility to race on the 15's for this season until I get new 13's over the winter. When we get them, we'll work on steering geometry as Retromotorsport said and bend a few steering arms.

The diff is still at Grandma's in Yorkshire - somebody will be coming to England later this year, I hope, so they can bring it back. If not, we'll post it.

By my calcs, not allowing for any loss in the system, with the 4.1 the top speed at 8500 revs will be about 139 - based on a 13 in wheel and 205mm 60% ratio I get a wheel diameter of 22.6 inches - Yoko racing tyres are 22.7 so I'm pretty close. I think 139 is probably fast enough - the Elva goes much faster but it has a basic aero design so it does clamp down to the track at high speed - you can't say that about a RS1600.

Young Walt's (he's 25 by the way so hardly "young") video is good, isn't it. The track was really flooded so the first lap they all went crazy - you saw the spinning Ginettas. Then they all scared themselves and slowed down a bit. It then rained for 18 hours more and I went out, without camera, on the Sunday morning - I'll swear the guys at the back of the grid were in canoes!
