    Re: Me new Mk V

Seen this on a lot of 24v's that seem to be running fine, glad i decided to have it checked before it went in the Cortina as its a lot easier/cheaper to fix it BEFORE the bits eat the internals.

"Sump removed and pan checked, in the bottom were small bits of a guide

    Fine silvering of the oil.

Tensioner Blade bottom end checked, slipper still in place but it had slipped in the location slot.

Oil pick up checked slither of metal in it

Oil pump removed stripped and checked, top plate scored, pump body 2 deep scores

So strip out front of engine

    Timing cover removed

    Blade removed

So that explains the gudie bits, the silvering of the oil in the bottom of the sump and the metal found in the oil pick up and the scores in the oil pump."

    Re: Me new Mk V

Its ok, was expecting it to have some damage to the tensioner anyway, thats why the front was stripped off it to have a look, its common on these.

They dont make any noise to indicate its fooked so best off having a look, as although they keep running fine like it for ages eventually something has to give.

Its just one of them things, if you buy a second hand pinto you ALWAYS check the cam belt, if you buy one of these you always check the tensioner.

I'd rather buy it an oil pump, filter and gaskets now and know its good for another 80,000 miles than fit the bugger and have it explode in a few months.

Just means its finally run in when the tensioner needs doing.

Good move there Mart That is coming along nicely now

I have seen those chain tensioners on the bay for £90.00 is that right?

Keep the updates and pics regular mate - I am partial to the mk 4/5.

    Re: Me new Mk V

I dunno about 90 quid, they are not available from Fords any more, Barry at XR4i spares (he had them remanufactured to the same spec as the Fords later spec modified ones) has them at £120 or TopBoss do em at 200!!

They sound expensive but generally will last over 100,000 miles and not much else goes wrong with these things so its not to bad.

    There has been more progress.

A smaller nissan alternator has been fitted higher up on the engine so it dont hit the crossmember.

    Coming along nicely, popup

What did the broken blade-thingy do? Was it the tensioner for the timing chain, in the same way that pintos have that little wheely-thing?

yes mate, sposed to keep the chain from flapping about, although the amount of em that keep running with the guides broken in half makes me think Cosworth could have saved money and made em shorter.

    Re: Me new Mk V

Heres the latest instalment, some problems have reared their ugly heads but nothing serious i think.

The hole for the loom cut and strengthened.

room for the loom with the engine in

    But not for this rad

    or the sump

    or the offside fannymould

This is down to the engine mounts being home made by the previous owner i think, were probably fine for the 2.8 that was in it before but not the 24v, taps spaced the engine up 1/4" on the mounts and as the pics show there still isnt room.

Gearbox mount lines up ok though

2wd Sierra prop is the same diameter as the Cortina one though so making a prop will be ok.

The tensioner blade on mine was snapped exactly like yours. Sounded sweet as a nut when it ran! Got a new blade, chain etc and almost everything from ford, they can still get most of it. Looking good!
