much prefer the clubman front looks smart
i just think they look a bit more agressive than the cute round nose minis, and the good thing is there so light they fly with a good engine in them. got it sorted in the end the starter soliniod had jammed open and the starter motor had burned out!

if it aint broke, break it!
got the floor and inner sil all welded in, took a picture then my camera batteries ran out.
ujyjyjyj 004.jpg
then stripped and zinc primed the floor crossmember
ujyjyjyj 002.jpg
ujyjyjyj 003.jpg
now its ready to be welded in. i might hamerite the inside of the crossmember aswell just to try and stop the rust. i also plan to fill the chassis rails and sills full of waxoil after kurusting, zinc priming and hamerite
if it aint broke, break it!
some more for ya. took the outer sill off and found a few nastys but using my method of "if in doubt cut it out", i will soon get it sorted.

fffff8o8ko8uko 011.jpg
just need to weld along the bottom of the sill
fffff8o8ko8uko 013.jpg
does the weld that goes along the bottom of the outer sill have to be seem welded or can it be spot welded for the m o t?
if it aint broke, break it!
Mot says continuous, but in reality if you spot/plug it and it looks good and is strong theres no way it can fail, i think the continuous weld applies for if its patched or has a cover sill fitted
nice work mate keep at it
i started cutting the arch out to tub it for the bubble arches and what a surprise found a few more nastys! a big chunk of filler just crunched of in my hand

Just a few things....are your repair pieces rusty steel? It doesnt look clean from where im sat thats all. Also wheelarch and lower 1/4 repair panels will cover those bits that look crusty
Yeah, got to cut all that old crappy rust out, or you will be back doing it again next year
www.gulfpetrolheads.com
thanks for the encouragment lads. the metal im using at the mo has got some small amount of surface rust on but this will all be removed with i wire wheel and then kurusted before welding on. where can i get the lower 1/4 repair panel from? i cant seem to find it anywhere?
if it aint broke, break it!
i got a replacement lower rear quarter panel off of ebay, was 20quid i think... the guy who i bought it off has been mentioned before for panels, but i cant for the life of me remember his name so im not much use
do like the mini too
i got ruthless with the rust today and cut all the crusty crap out the rear 1/4 panel and decided to start again from scratch. i found a good sheet metal suplier "kgc panels" i bought a nibler and set about the car.

I finally got a chance to work on my essey today! I had a few problems with my welder, it works but I can’t seem to get enough heat in the weld pool to get nice neat welds. I pissed around for ages the only way I could get good penetration was to turn it up on maximum and turn the wire speed right up which got good penetration but I had to move really fast or it blow holes in the metal. Needless to say this annoyed me at times so some of the welds are not pretty but they are very strong at least. I’ve had to run the welder through a 35m extension cable and wonder if this is somehow affecting the electricity flow. I’m happy with my progress just not the welds, allthough most will be covered with seam sealer in the boot. here’s some pics………
bottom of outer sill welded on

i got the escort over the other side of the garage yesterday and inspected the rust with a screwdriver. nothing that i didnt expect but i was hoping it was going to be better than the other side? it has got a very bubbly rear arch and i trim along the sill that i suspect is hiding all kind of nastys. this is what i found first......

outer sill off
stage12 002.jpg
stage12 003.jpg
i had to smash the shit out of the crossmember it wouldnt come out!
stage12 004.jpg
got the fecker out in the end though with the help of a F.B.H.
stage12 007.jpg
stage12 005.jpg
the front floorpan has had another panel welded over the top of it at some point, so the old metal has just been roting away underneath untill now.
stage12 006.jpg
if it aint broke, break it!
i spent most of today still cutting out rusty flakey metal. it looks like the side sections of the chassis rail is rusted right through and holed, but only in one place? the rest of it seems fine. i dont really want to replace the whole rail just because of one nasty bit so im going to repair it rather than replace it. when i do this im going to cut all the shitty metal out then overlap the repair plate by a inch or so then weld outside and inside the rail and that should keep the strenth?
stage13 001.jpg
stage13 002.jpg
stage13 003.jpg
the outer sill had already been repaired at some point but it was just welded over the top of the original sill. so this was removed.
