    MK1 escort resto.

Started to finally do something my escort tonight, i am lucky in that there isn't much in the way of rust to deal with. Will get really stuck in this weekend.

Cleaned up this one tonight. Note the lack of seam sealer applied by ford, but there is about 4 inches on the other side!its amazing that any of them survived past their 10th birthday! Also check out how the spot welds wander off where the panel joins the door pillar!!

Will be posting plenty more pics soon!

a little bit to let in here

Some accident in the past resulted in this gouge, that was repaired (not) with a large lump of filler. It fell out with very little persuasion
    Not much to do here!

    Or here .

Looks like you've finished before you started.
    Very nice condition
And I think that gouge belongs in the "Show us your gash" thread.

I know i am lucky with the condition of it, though it did take 7 years of looking at various mk1s before i found this one, and i have had it in storage since 1999!!

No sorry mate, its going to be sunset red. Though tawny brown has grown on me as a colour over the years. But the misses and the kids scream YUK at the the colour. So it will be like exactly like this one, except on 7" rs 4 spokes.

A bit more done, No more gash, sorry DR, and you still haven,t got round to displaying your favourite gash .

Added some type 49 strengthening panels from expressed, got to do the spring hanger skids and the little panels at the bottom of the front strut webs. but it isn't exactly obvious how they fit. Anyone got any pics?

Good days work there looks like your almost done now you git

How good and how much were the strengtheners you put on? Seem to remember they were about £50 the pair when i last looked

And the small bits on the verticles just go onto the bottom of them to extend them down to the bottom of the inner wing/chassis rail

£66 plus value (not) added tax for those 2. Not cheap but they fit real well. In fact all of the expressed stuff seems too. The full set, excl the strengthening top plates was about £170. (I wont fit any top plates as my strut tops are mint and i dont want to cover that up and i am not going to do a snide copy of an Rs)

    Re: MK1 escort resto.

So thats about £250 for the full set then i best get saving then

I hear what your saying, although for mine im putting them on for the benefits of having them considering mine have a few small cracks, i can only assume from the stiff suspension. Plus the way i think of it is that ford would have fitted it for a reason on the uprated cars so if your uprating the car then fit them

All depends what your doing with the car really, plus it is nice to have original strut tops

I may well still fit them, as i don't intend to sell the car, ever. I know whats underneath and thats whats important, i suppose. It just took so long to find a car with unmolested strut tops that i can't bring myself to cover them up, Same scenario with the wheelarches untouched and pretty much mint, but i would like to fit steel bubbles, but again i can't bring myself to cut off mint arches.

Darth, i don't think i Frost accept paypal though they do accept Credit Cards. Have seen them on fleabay, but they were double the price!!!

If your not looking to sell it then you got to fit them i recon, anyone whos anoraky enough to be looking for original strut tops would be able to tell yours are original even under the plates.

Also on the arch front, if you want them then put them on, but on the other hand you could always do them in the future, its not hard to put new paint on the arches tubs and 1/4's at some point in the future if/when you finally decide you want them is it especially if you ditch the tawney in favour of solid red

That would of been be me then .

Cleaned up the damage on the rear 1/4, knocked it about a bit and removed most of the damage just a skim needed now.

The only bit of rust i could find , about an hours work should fix it.

Pretty good here considering, not much to do . Check out he condition of the paint under the rubber bung on the spring hanger. I also took off the rear drum the half shaft flanges are still shiny and new along with the adjusters, slave cylinder, springs etc.

Spare wheel well is perfect too .

I'm not sure this qualifies as a resto and is possibly in the wrong section.

I think you might be right, definitely a project but not to much restoration to be done .

Bet you still get done before me though, everyone (other half, kids, friends etc) seems to think that my time is theirs and if any jobs require time, thought or muscle to complete they are convinced i am the only one for the job. And of course whatever they want doing must be more important than me finally getting in the garage which has been a long time being built .

Mk1zetec aka, taxi driver, shopping assistant, builder, electrician, decorator, comms cabling engineer. And in my spare time i run a comms company employing 30 people, most of whom appear to resent having to even make the decision to breathe whilst working for me.

Can you tell i have had a day so far .

Well I will make you envious then.
I have no wife, only one (supposedly) grown up son, who rarely pesters me. I live in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours to upset by grinding etc at all hours.
Today I took a day off work and spent it tinkering with my car, completely undisturbed.

Please shut up, below the pleasant jovial persona you put across you are obviously quite cruel!

I have to say i now know that there is alot to be said for keeping things as uncomplicated as possible.

I will escape it all for a few hours tomorrow, so i should get most of welding thats left done. Its been arduous, one small reel of wire and one small bottle and i think it should done . Leaving plenty time to do all my other jobs .

Cleaned up the os inner wing

Sorted out the little bit at the front of the os wheel arch.

Let in some new metal. My butt welding is so much better (IMHO) now i have a self darkening welding mask.

Had a couple of pin holes at the base of the outer tub where it meets the spare wheel wellso i let in a bead of weld here not worth plating will be cover by new seam sealer anyway.

Put on the outer drivers sill next, move back the gearstick hole. then tramp bars and panhard rod and type 49 spring hanger skids and then clean up all the surface rust on the underside, just a small bit under the boot floor. Then start the POR15 treatment & paint ready for stone chip and then body colour to finish

To clean it off i used a hot air gun, scraper, hand held wire brush, thin i stippled in cellulose thinners with a stiff little brush and wiped clean with lots of old rag. Still got other side to do, crap dirty job .

Then it will be on with POR-15 marine clean. POR-15 metal ready. POR-15 rust preventative paint. POR-15 tie-coat primer. Then stonechip and Top coat to finish. Cant wait to get the underside finished.

    Re: MK1 escort resto.

A bit more off the list. The worst part of the car was the OS sill. Not any more . Thats all the structural repairs complete. Just got to move the gearbox mounts, turn round the gearstick hole fit the wings and front panel and the last of the type 49 strengthening panels. Very happy with the sill badge recess, cut it out of the old sill (the doorstep area was to bad to save) and let it in to the new sill once the butt welds were ground it turned out it was a filler less piece of work. Strange that the sill was as bad as it was when the rest of the car is so good. Also fitted the fillets to the bottom of the NS pan webs.

Been doing a bit more over the last couple of days. Cleaning the underside off is a b!t(h of a job, would not of wanted to do it without the spit. Been coming in looking like a coal miner. Found some rust when using the angle grinder with a cup brush. Had to weld a new lip on about 8" of the NS rear arch and reapir the inner arch at both ends. Got a little bit left to clean off and then put on the tramp brackets and spring skids etc and stonechip and paint. Going to book in for full respray in the next couple of days, had a few quotes ranging from £1500 to £2500 for full inside and topside paint job all from reputable companies the one i would like to the job is the most expensive and the furthest away. Decisions, decisions.
