    'Pushing on' when cornering

Was out in the escort yesterday trying to fine tune the front setup and on country lanes giving it a bit turning in the front end seems to push on a little bit if that makes sense? Like it is almost understeering.

I have coilovers and adjustable tca's on the front with a double width anti dive in the mix too. What could cause this?

could wide tyres cause this? i'm sure I remember gary (retromotorsport) posting something about "push" making a car harder to turn in

or a welded diff, but you'd know if you had one

Wellit just so happens there is a welded diff in there but i wouldn't think at speed it would cause that much of a 'push on' in the corners!? At slow speed yes it is clunky, but you live with that!

It is running with 185/60/13's on the front so not that wide really.

well a mate of mine used to have a welded diff in his car (not ford) and he says it makes the car feel understeery, so I wouldn't rule it out.

just mash the throttle to cure the understeer

on a side note, apart from this how does the welded diff feel? are the shafts strong enough in an escort?

Mashing the throttle on country roads to get oversteer wasn't a good idea as there narrow, but on normal roads that is usually the answer!

Feels ok to me, slow speed stuff you can hear the wheels scrubbing but when moving at normal speed it is fine, and very predictable for a bit of sideways fun!

a welder will cause push on at any speed, its the angle that makes the difference. Have you tried running the front shocks a bit softer, or lowering pressures?

answer first of all is fit a proper dff! , even on a trailing throttle a welded diff will want to make the car understeer and difficult to turn in,

fitting wider stickier rubber to the FRONT will help

    Re: 'Pushing on' when cornering

Front shocks are not adjustable aother than height sadly, so softening them off is not an answer and I am happy with the stiffness of the front was just the turn in really that was a bit of a surprise.

I kinda thought it was pointing to the diff but didn't want to change it as I don't have a proper 'slipper' at the moment so was using this for fun!

Welded diffs are just for showing off and having a laugh, they are rubbish in road cars, you soon get bored of them mucking up the handling, especially something like a modded escort that should feel nice and crisp, you can still slide an escort with an open diff and it'll be nicer to drive at other times if you cant afford a slipper.

Hi, remove the centre clamp/rubber on the antidivekit and try again.

I'd be interested in the results of this ... as removing the center mount just means that the TCA's will be forced back under braking ..
turning forces work on the two end bushes ..
    so.. the results ?

whats the tracking set to ? could try having a bit of toe out this will help the car turn in a bit better. but can unsettle the car under braking if to much. But i would run a standard open diff rather than a welded one, i've seen what happens when a shaft breaks at the bearing end and the wheel comes off and takes the rear 1/4 with it.

Tracking has been done but not very well I don't think, what are the optimum tracking settings for a 'fast road' car? Am running with adjustable tca, non rose jointed ones.

Well had a look yesterday at the front end and it turns out that the anti dive kit was loose! :eek

Changed the allen bolts for proper ones and all is tight again and it feels so much better now, nice turn in and not so much push on in corners but i think the diff is still going to get swapped.
