    cosworth no start

after years of building my mk1 escort cosworth tonight was the time to try and start it.
put some petrol in the tank, connected the battery said a little and to my suprise it flew over on the starter
not so much of a suprise was that it didnt start
didnt have much time to investigate (not that i know what im investigating) as i had to go and pick the mrs up from work.
so was wondering if anyone can give me a few pointers what to check?
i know its got fuel to the injector rail because the pipe there was leaking had to tighten it up
other than that all i had time to do was put a meter on the + coil wire with ignition on and it was showing 11.92v
didnt get round to trying while cranking, any suggestions on basic checks i can do tommorrow? would be much appreciated
    thanks.

    Re: cosworth no start

Right firs things first you need 12v at the coil if your coming off the original loom there might be a prob if so run a seperate live to the coil. Second is it a 2wd 0r 4wd loom if a 2wd make sure the distributor plug isnt mixed up with the crank sensor plug and if its a 4wd loom make sure the nock sensor plug and cranksensor plug aint mixed up first let me know

    Re: cosworth no start

Not sure what system you have ........

Have you got anything out the main lead from the coil ?

Have you got a pic of the ignition system you have fitted or is it straight out the ecu ?

You managed to crack the fuel side i'm sure you'll sort this.

    Re: cosworth no start

    thanks joe and savi
i am unsure which loom it is as i believe it was custom made, heres a link of the engine and loom from the car it was from
    http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...hlight=reyland
i will do a volt check on the coil tommorrow and check the sensors are not mixed up.
the ignition system is straight out the ecu savi.
just a thought i had today to rule it out... does the body of the ecu have to be earthed? as i have it mounted in the glovebox on the parcel tray.
and the ignition live wire on cossy loom i connected to a pin on the escort fusebox that goes live with ignition on...that ok??
    thanks.

    Re: cosworth no start

Your fuel pump is running which is also controlled by the ecu so that must be earthed.

Need to be looking at the crank / cam sensors, feed to the coil 1st

    Re: cosworth no start

ok chaps ...been down garage tonight 1st thing check my battery volts (brand new battery) 11.9v.
then checked my power to coil, ign on 11.6v.
so nicked the battery off my daily bmw tested 12.2v.
ran a separate live to coil tested 12.2v cranked it over..no spark.
swapped crank sensor and distributor sensor plugs.... no spark.
checked if anything comming out of the main lead from coil... nothing
all my relays click as they should, amal valve clicks, pump pressures up etc.
probably something stupid iv done wrong i expect
its a group A coil i believe and i have one wire on the positive black/yellow and two on the negative both green.
does this help narrow down what could be wrong? thanks

    Re: cosworth no start

have you tested the coil to see if it works ? you can put a light bulb to the two wire on the coil when you crank the engine over it will flasher also have you got a spare ignition module

checked crank sensor gap this morn it is 0.60mm.
got sensor off at the moment to clean it up, is there anyway it can be tested off the car, should i get any readings with a multimeter?
just been messing around with a multimeter on pins of sensor and sensor contact and get no readings at all.

    Re: cosworth no start

Conect the sensor back up set meter to ac, pull the rubber sleave back go in either side of the two terminals while its still conected spin engine over and you should see between 0.7 to 0.9 volts ac, this type of sensor creaites its own current in ac

    Re: cosworth no start

Have you got the correct flywheel fitted ?

I would suspect there's some kind of magnet or similar on it for the sensor to work ?

As you can guess i'm not a expert on cosworth lumps but most of the basic pickups are the same.

    That's good news !!!!

I went out to a guy who had fitted a new engine in his Peugeot & it wouldn't start ....................... he used the wrong flywheel without the pickup !!!!

    Re: cosworth no start

had a bit more time today so double checked some of the things again,
charged my battery up i have 12v at the coil
did a continuity test on crank sensor plug wires all ok and goes to pins 3 and 4 on ecu
connected meter up to crank sensor wires in ac mode and cranked over engine and get no reading at all.
so im guessing my next step is try a new crank sensor?
