    Water temp sensor location

What's the best location for a water temp sensor on a turbo engine? The way I see it is I have two options...

    1) I could put it in the water rail at the back of the engine (Duratec in RWD), where the coolant is just leaving the engine. This would be the logical place for a N/A engine and it would give a true reading of the temperature of the coolant inside the engine.

    2) Or I could put it further down stream after where the turbo coolant mixes with it, and just before it enters the rad. This will probably read a higher temperature, but give a true reading of the highest temperature that the coolant gets to.

its more important to know the temp of the water in the head, than anywhere else

Usually just behind the thermostat is the prefered location on factory engines, so it measures the water temp in the head, like Graham said.

    Thanks guys .

Makes sense if you think about it really. Putting the sensor in the water outlet at the back is going to be easier for me too, as there is already an M12x1.5 blank there. Win, win!

Agreed and as an fyi the flow through the turbo is quite high, so water heating in use isn't excessive - its more there to cool the housing / bearings on hot shut downs using thermosyphon principle.
