    Valve shims for big cams

There seems to be a couple of options for running big cams, either under bucket shims from trd or similar or yaris 1fz-fe solid shims. both these options are fairly expensive.

So i was wondering if i could set the clearance using standard shims and buckets and then tack weld the shim into the bucket using a tig welder to stop the cam lobe flicking it out.

I realise it sounds like a bit of a bodge but just looking for a cheaper alternative.

I think with big cams they will still catch on the edge of the shim since i'm sure the shim is slightly smaller than the bucket? So if the shim is welded in place then there is still a risk the cam could catch and maybe cause some damage as the shim wont give like it would normally do...

Whats the cost of the yaris solid lifters? I know these are a cheaper alternative to the TODA kit which is about 800 quid.

Personally I would save up and do the engine properly

how big is "big"? I have personally installed 9.1mm cams with the assurance of the cam grinder and it worked well. However their 9.4mm lobes needed the conversion.

The yaris ones are £19 each plus vat from toyota so a total of £365.

I have a pair of kent cams T1606. They have 8.95mm of lift and a 306 degree duration. I rang kent cams and they said i should run under bucket shims and if you read bill sherwoods page he says anything much over 8mm you should.

Odd that he would say that as I don't see why. I looked really closely when I installed the 9.1mm cams they definitely landed completely on the shims.

I would imagine it would happen at high revs if it were going to when everything moves around a bit.

its not just about total lift, very rapid valve acceleration can flick the shims out, so you can have a low lift cam with is more likely to give problems than a higher lift one.

i think im gonna do a few meetings this year with standard cams to retain the reliability whilst i get the rest of the car working well. I can then build myself a proper engine over the winter with the shim under buckets. The cams will probably work far better with a load of compression anyway.
