Whats the best car diagnostic scanner

As tittle needs to cover all (95%) of the cars out there across all systems just junked my snap on unit because it was useless then I just bough a Launch X431 which Ive sent back tried on a few cars and wouldnt communicate with most systems on a BMW E46 and a Mercedes A140 worked well on VW's.

So before I buy something else what have you guys used with success??

Ive been looking at AUTEL and Autoboss.

Vtech Multiscan i have, has been good, but im told the launch is really good...................... dont matter which you go for it wont cover everything, i've ended up buying dealer type now such as Vag com, Lexia, Op com, Renault can clip etc etc.

Tried the Autel but couldnt get on with it.

my employers have been looking long and hard at this, needing to buy 2500 units they really have to get it right, unfortunately it seems there's no one unit thats best.

ive had good results with bosch kts, also heard delph does some good kit, cant remember the 3rd one my companies trialing but they all have drawbacks and and gaps in capability

Re: Whats the best car diagnostic scanner

I agree the all will some holes I researched the Launch and spoke with a couple of people hence why I bought it but it would only do engine management on a 2000my e46 and a A140 and would even talk to a Vito CDI and it has the latest update.......

There not what I would class as obscure cars

I have heard bad reports on the Bosch.

Savvi what issues di you have with Autel and what model did you have??

    Thanks

Re: Whats the best car diagnostic scanner

They have a new version out which they keep trying to get me to buy, i paid £2800 for mine when i bought it back in 2008/9 loads at the time but after trying it against the Snap on Moddis the multiscan was fair better.
I also had paid extra because i had the extra leads including the Multiplexer which enables you to talk to Mercs and Crysler as well as a few other models on can and multi network cars.

    Their website http://diagnostic-equipment.co.uk/

I'm not sure on the electronic brake as i have Lexia and Peugeot planet which is the dealer stuff, i found as ive got more work and needed to do more stuff i've just bought dealer level diagnostics as i still got caught out with just having the one system.

My accountant said my multiscan paid for itself in the 1st year as he catorised it on my invoicing so he could track it's use.

Autel i tried was the cheapo version with differant cards for various vehicles.

Re: Whats the best car diagnostic scanner

Alot of guys i know use toughbooks for diagnostics, however once you load some of the software you need another one for some of the other as they interfere with each other.

My mate runs 3 toughbooks now because of problems he kept having, the Bmw and mecs are the worse programs, having said that the guys selling on ebay are not original software usually chinese copy stuff, but they are computer geeks so may have found a way around the problems well known ?

Its unusual that you are having bother using the launch x431 on an e46 bmw i use the launch mainly on vw audi and bmw and never had much bother with bmw apart from trying to read airbag codes on a 2004 z4

Re: Whats the best car diagnostic scanner

We have 4 different diagnostic machines, bosch kts, dec with picascope, launch x431 and a carmen. The launch is tempramentle and slow, the dec is good for reprogramming, carmen for japanese and german. The bosch kts is a good alrounder but doesnt like bmw or landrover and since the last update isnt as quick as it used to be

Have you considered the new Autoboss Elite, Its a very good bit of kit, I have ford Ids, vw vas5054, peugeot planet, citreon lexia, renault clip, solas pro and merc star. but they are all nearly redundant now as i am using the new autoboss elite, its quick and the coverage is very good on everything i have tried it on rgds Andy
